On Sunday, February 16, 2025, Justina Wamae shared her perspective on why Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union position was unsuccessful. She pointed to multiple factors that may have negatively impacted Kenya’s candidacy, including widespread criticism from Gen Z, incidents of abductions, and diplomatic missteps, such as French President Emmanuel Macron’s intervention in the Democratic Republic of Congo crisis.
According to Wamae, these issues collectively undermined Kenya’s chances, ultimately affecting Raila’s prospects. “Various Gen Z letters and social media reactions, incidents of Gen Z abductions, the disappearance of Besigye, the abduction of a Tanzanian journalist, Macron’s call regarding the DRC crisis, and a series of reckless comments complicated our candidature,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Her remarks have sparked discussions over what went wrong in Raila’s high-profile attempt, with some arguing that Kenya’s diplomatic efforts were insufficient in rallying the support necessary to secure the influential AU post.

Despite the loss, Raila continues to receive messages of encouragement from political figures in Kenya and across Africa. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi was among those who publicly expressed support, stating that the former prime minister’s stature remains significant regardless of the outcome. “Warmest congratulations to Raila Odinga for representing Kenya with determination. This is not a loss; it is a testament that you are too influential for this position. You remain our pride,” Kingi shared in a statement on X.
Kingi also extended a warm welcome to Raila, emphasizing that his leadership remains essential at home. “Karibu Nyumbani Baba,” he added. His sentiments reflect the views of Raila’s supporters, who believe he still has a vital role to play in shaping Kenya’s political future.
Following the election results, Raila addressed the outcome in Addis Ababa, acknowledging the verdict while expressing gratitude for the opportunity to contest. “In any competition, there are only two possibilities—you either win or lose. This was one of those moments,” he stated. He reassured his supporters that he harbors no bitterness, adding, “I am very happy. I am still available to contribute to the continent in other capacities.”
His words have been widely interpreted as a demonstration of statesmanship, reinforcing his long-standing commitment to Pan-African leadership. Additionally, he hinted at shifting his focus back to domestic matters, stating, “My plan now is to return home. There are many responsibilities waiting for me.” This statement has fueled speculation about his next political move, with analysts suggesting that his return could significantly influence Kenya’s political landscape as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
President William Ruto, who had actively supported Raila’s bid, also responded to the outcome, emphasizing that Kenya remains committed to playing an active role in African affairs. “This election was not about individuals or specific nations; it was about Africa’s future. That future remains bright, and together, we will continue working towards a more united, prosperous, and influential Africa on the global stage,” Ruto stated.
