Motorists and commuters across Kenya have been urged to remain cautious as heavy rains continue to affect road conditions, reducing visibility and making surfaces dangerously slippery.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) warned that the ongoing downpours — combined with fog in some regions — are increasing the risk of road accidents.
What Drivers Must Do Immediately
NTSA is advising motorists to take the following precautions:
- Drive at reduced speeds
- Maintain a safe distance between vehicles
- Turn on headlights during rainfall
- Use windshield wipers to keep visibility clear
- Remove stalled vehicles quickly from roads
- Avoid flooded roads completely
Driving through flooded sections can lead to vehicles stalling, being swept away, or causing major traffic disruptions.
Pedestrians Also Warned
Pedestrians have been urged to:
- Use designated crossing points
- Avoid walking on flooded roads
- Stay alert near busy highways
Floods Already Causing Casualties
The warning comes as intensified rainfall continues to trigger flooding in multiple regions.
According to authorities:
- 88 people have died due to flooding
- 2,690 families displaced
- Several roads reported impassable or partially flooded
Impact on Nairobi & Major Commuter Routes
Commuters should expect:
- Slow traffic during morning and evening rush hours
- Waterlogged roads in low-lying areas
- Increased breakdowns and stalled vehicles
- Reduced visibility in early mornings and evenings
Commuter Advice (Metros Safety Tips)
- Leave earlier than usual
- Avoid river crossings and underpasses
- Check brake condition before travel
- Use public transport where possible
- Follow traffic police instructions
NTSA emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility and urged all road users to cooperate to reduce accidents during the rainy season.
Stay alert. Stay safe.
