A 66-year-old woman is now facing legal action over a tragic incident that claimed the life of a five-year-old girl more than four decades ago. Janice Nix has been officially charged with manslaughter following the death of Andrea Bernard, a young child who suffered fatal injuries in 1978.
Authorities report that Andrea, who was familiar with Nix, sustained severe burns after an alleged assault at a residence on Ashley Road, Thornton Heath, on June 6, 1978. She was rushed to a specialist burns unit for urgent medical care, but despite extensive treatment, she succumbed to her injuries over a month later on July 13, 1978.
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Nix is also facing allegations of child cruelty involving another minor, an eight-year-old child at the time. Reports of these historical offences were brought to the attention of law enforcement in September 2022, prompting an investigation that has now led to formal charges.
“This case highlights the importance of seeking justice, no matter how much time has passed,” a spokesperson for the authorities stated.
