Raila’s Political Comeback? AUC Bid Faces Hurdles as Domestic Influence Grows

As Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship encounters stiff competition, political observers in Kenya are closely watching his domestic strategy. With Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahamoud Youssouf recently securing Egypt’s backing, Raila’s continental ambitions are far from certain. Should the AUC position elude him, Raila is expected to reassert his role as Kenya’s leading opposition figure.

An editorial in People Daily highlights Raila’s concerns about the current cabinet structure, pointing to former opposition leaders who have now embraced government roles. Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi and Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, once vocal critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration, have fully integrated into the government machinery. Meanwhile, experienced politicians such as Cooperatives and MSME Development Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya have adopted a more cautious approach, aware of shifting priorities in the administration.

The swift transition of former opposition figures into government ranks has sparked public debate. Mbadi recently dismissed concerns over high taxation as trivial, prompting criticism for insensitivity, while Wandayi defended the controversial Adani deal only for the President to later cancel it. These developments have intensified scrutiny of Raila’s influence and the “Raila Cabinet Secretaries” within President William Ruto’s administration.

Amid these political shifts, Gen Z-led protests continue to highlight widespread frustration among young Kenyans. Demonstrators have taken to the streets to challenge policies they view as stifling their future, from education funding to healthcare and innovation support. Catholic bishops have described the situation as a “culture of lies,” lamenting the erosion of transparency and integrity in governance.

Raila’s careful balancing act underscores his continued relevance in Kenya’s political landscape. By maintaining oversight of domestic affairs while pursuing continental ambitions, he positions himself as a strategic player ready to adapt regardless of the AUC outcome.

As the decision on the AUC chairmanship approaches, the coming days will be critical for Raila Odinga and the credibility of former opposition leaders who now occupy key government positions.
