ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union (AU) chairmanship faced unexpected challenges, with Gen Z activism, high-profile abductions, and diplomatic setbacks playing a decisive role in Kenya’s failure to secure the influential position.
According to political analyst Justina Wamae, Kenya’s AU campaign was undermined by a combination of domestic youth-led protests and international diplomatic complications. “Gen Z letters, social media campaigns, the abduction of Tanzanian journalists, and interventions like French President Emmanuel Macron’s involvement in the DRC crisis all complicated our candidature,” she noted on social media.
The former PM’s campaign, widely covered by digital platforms, became a battleground for Kenya’s younger generation. Many tech-savvy and politically aware youth voiced their dissatisfaction online, influencing public discourse and reducing support for Raila’s AU bid.

Despite these hurdles, Raila Odinga maintained his composure, acknowledging the election results while expressing gratitude for the opportunity. In a public statement in Addis Ababa, he said, “In any competition, there are only two possibilities – you either win or lose. This was one of those moments. I am very happy. I am still available to contribute to the continent in other capacities.”
Political Support and Continued Influence
Even in defeat, Raila continues to receive backing from Kenya’s political leadership. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi praised the former PM, saying, “Warmest congratulations to Raila Odinga for representing Kenya with determination. This is not a loss; it is a testament that you are too influential for this position. You remain our pride.” Kingi also welcomed Raila back home, stating, “Karibu Nyumbani Baba.”
President William Ruto, who actively supported Raila’s AU campaign, emphasized the broader implications of the election. “This was not about individuals or specific nations; it was about Africa’s future. That future remains bright, and together, we will continue working toward a more united, prosperous, and influential Africa on the global stage,” Ruto said.
With Raila’s attention now shifting back to domestic politics, analysts predict his return could significantly influence Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. The former PM’s continued involvement underscores his enduring role in shaping Kenya’s political discourse and Pan-African leadership agenda.
