Fred Matiang’i Travels to Washington to Resign from World Bank Ahead of 2027 Presidential Bid

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and 2027 presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i has traveled to Washington, DC, to officially hand over his duties at the World Bank. His departure comes after a month-long break in Kenya, which stirred political discussions, especially following his declaration to run for president in the upcoming elections.

🗳️ Presidential Ambitions and Political Moves

Matiang’i recently aligned with Rigathi Gachagua’s opposition team, generating significant attention in Kenyan politics. His presidential announcement drew massive crowds in his home region of Gusii, where he held a rally at Gusii Stadium on May 2, 2025.

Speaking to supporters, Matiang’i stated:

“I am ready to be President of Kenya.”

He emphasized that he would return to the US to formally resign from his World Bank role before fully engaging in his campaign, highlighting his respect for the institution and commitment to proper procedure.

📣 Support and Confirmation

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua confirmed Matiang’i’s plans in a radio interview, explaining that completing the resignation process was essential. He encouraged patience, noting that leaving the World Bank abruptly would be inappropriate.

Despite this, rumors emerged suggesting Matiang’i might abandon his presidential bid and return to his international position. Close aides, however, insist he is fully committed to the 2027 race.

🏛️ Party Support and Future Plans

The Jubilee Party has already offered Matiang’i its presidential ticket, promising strong campaign backing. Additionally, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has declared him as their party leader, adding speculation about which political vehicle he will choose upon his return.

Matiang’i is expected to remain in Washington for a few months, after which he will return to Kenya to resume his campaign. His official party announcement is anticipated to shape the dynamics of the 2027 presidential race.
