Fred Matiang’i’s Public Appearance Sparks Speculation

Fred Matiang’i, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary known for his significant influence in the previous regime, has kept a low profile since leaving office two years ago. However, his recent public appearance in Nairobi has reignited discussions about his political ambitions and future plans. Tuko.co.ke reports that Matiang’i was spotted at a high-end Nairobi eatery on Thursday, December 19, in the company of Kiprono Kittony, the former national chairman of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI).

The establishment they visited is owned by Kittony, who later tweeted, “Glad to share our delicious Sirwo Coffee with former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, who patronised us this morning.” This rare sighting of Matiang’i, who has largely avoided publicity since leaving office, has stirred speculation among Kenyans about his next political move.

Matiang’i’s appearance in public has led many Kenyans to wonder about his intentions. Some believe he might be gearing up for a presidential bid in 2027, while others speculate he could be offered a Cabinet Secretary position in the current government.

One Kenyan remarked, “The man from Nyamira is around or could be the successor of Kithure Kindiki?” Another added, “Uhuru looking out for his niggas in exile, and William gave him a pass.” These sentiments reflect the public’s intrigue about Matiang’i’s re-emergence in the political scene.

Reports indicate that Matiang’i might have his sights set on the presidency in 2027. According to Tuko.co.ke, he has allegedly hired a Canadian lobbying firm, Dickens & Madson, to strategize and bolster his potential presidential campaign. The firm, led by former Israeli Mossad agent Ari Ben-Menashe, has a reputation for successfully managing high-stakes political campaigns, including that of Botswana’s President Duma Boko.

It is said that Matiang’i signed a contract with the firm on July 13, committing to pay KSh 32 million for their services. These include lobbying international organizations, governments, and influential agencies to boost his image and secure funding for his campaign. Although Matiang’i has not officially declared his candidacy, the move signals his serious consideration of a presidential bid.

Since leaving office, Matiang’i has adopted a low-key lifestyle, especially after facing legal challenges in early 2023. His minimal public engagements and deliberate avoidance of the limelight have only fueled curiosity about his plans.

This recent sighting, coupled with rumors of his presidential ambitions, has drawn comparisons to other political figures who took similar paths before making comebacks. One observer noted, “I just like how this guy’s (Matiang’i) name is always mentioned. People start talking about him in different ways.”

Cabinet Role Speculations

Apart from the possibility of a presidential run, some Kenyans believe Matiang’i could be considered for a Cabinet Secretary position. His close ties with former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his extensive experience in government have kept him in conversations about potential appointments. “So after the Uhuru-Ruto handshake, Matiang’i comes from his hideout?” commented a Kenyan on social media, hinting at a possible reconciliation between political camps that might pave the way for his return to government.

If Matiang’i is indeed planning to re-enter the political arena, his recent public appearance could be part of a broader strategy to reintroduce himself to the public. By keeping a low profile and emerging strategically, he may be gauging public opinion and building momentum for his next move. His choice to meet with Kittony, a prominent business figure, further adds to the speculation about his ambitions.

Fred Matiang’i’s sudden reappearance in Nairobi has sparked widespread speculation among Kenyans. While some believe he is preparing for a presidential bid in 2027, others think he might be eyeing a Cabinet Secretary position in the current administration. His reported hiring of a global lobbying firm to bolster his image and strategize for a campaign adds weight to the theory of a presidential run.

As the political landscape in Kenya continues to evolve, Matiang’i’s next steps will undoubtedly be watched closely. Whether he is positioning himself for a return to government or aiming for the highest office in the land, one thing is clear: Fred Matiang’i is not a figure Kenyans are ready to forget.
