Kasipu Member of Parliament, Charles Ongondo Were, has been shot dead in Nairobi, just two months after he said his life was in danger.
According to the police, Were was attacked on Wednesday evening around 7:30 PM near the City Mortuary Roundabout. A gunman riding on a motorcycle shot him at close range, fatally injuring him.
Witnesses said the MP was trailed by two men on a motorcycle before the attack. One of the assailants got off the bike and fired several shots at close range, seriously injuring the lawmaker.
“He was shot near the City Mortuary Roundabout and rushed to Nairobi Hospital. That is all I know for now,” a senior Nairobi police officer told the Nation. The officer added that the family will give further updates.
Police have launched investigations to find the two suspects who followed the MP’s car before shooting him.
Reports show that the gunmen were bold enough to carry out the attack on a busy highway known for tight security and many CCTV cameras.
The MP’s driver survived the shooting.
Two hours after the shooting, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrived at the crime scene to collect evidence.
