Kenyan and African Leadership in Global Sugar Industry: Jude Chesire’s Historic Appointment

For the first time in history, a Kenyan and an African has been elected to a top leadership role in the global sugar industry. Jude Chesire, acting CEO of the Kenya Sugar Board, was appointed Vice Chairman of the International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council, highlighting Kenya’s growing influence in global sugar production and Africa’s increasing representation in international agricultural decision-making.

Chesire’s appointment was confirmed during the ISO Council meeting held on November 29, 2024, at Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London. This high-profile gathering brought together world sugar industry leaders from 114 member countries, including the biggest sugar producers like Brazil, India, the European Union, and South Africa. His election is a milestone for Africa, which has long sought greater representation in global agricultural organizations.

The International Sugar Organization is the foremost decision-making body for the global sugar and ethanol industries, which collectively produce 165 million tonnes of sugar and hundreds of millions of tonnes of ethanol annually. Its influence spans across policy formulation, trade negotiations, and technological advancements.

By electing Chesire, the ISO Council acknowledges Kenya’s growing significance in the global sugar sector. Kenya is a notable sugar producer in Africa, and Chesire’s leadership is expected to enhance the country’s and continent’s contributions to this vital industry. It also opens the door for African voices to be heard in key discussions on sustainability, trade policies, and innovations affecting the sector.

Chesire’s appointment as Vice Chairman is also a stepping stone to an even greater role: he is poised to become the Chairman of the ISO Council in 2026. This two-year trajectory underscores the ISO’s confidence in his ability to steer the organization and highlights the growing recognition of Africa’s potential as a key player in the global sugar market.

During the council meeting in London, Jude Chesire was unanimously chosen for the Vice Chairmanship. His election coincided with the selection of Edga Herrera from Costa Rica as the new Chairman of the ISO. Herrera succeeds Sanjiv Chopra from India, who previously held the position. Together, Chesire and Herrera represent the growing diversity in ISO leadership, reflecting the global nature of the sugar industry.

The ISO’s leadership structure is designed to ensure broad representation across its member states. Chesire’s ascension signals the increasing importance of emerging markets, particularly in Africa and Central America, in shaping the future of sugar production and trade.

In his acceptance speech, Chesire expressed heartfelt gratitude for the honor and opportunity to serve in this prestigious role. “I’m elated and say thanks to the ISO Council. I never expected this, and so I thank God for the honor bestowed on me and my country,” he said. His humility and gratitude resonated with delegates, reinforcing the collaborative spirit of the organization.

Chesire’s appointment brings immense pride to Kenya, a nation striving to modernize its sugar industry amid challenges such as fluctuating global prices and competition from larger producers. His leadership is expected to bring fresh perspectives to these issues, benefiting not only Kenya but also other African nations grappling with similar challenges.

Strengthening Africa’s Role in Agriculture

Beyond the sugar industry, Chesire’s appointment underscores the importance of African leadership in global agricultural organizations. Africa is home to vast agricultural potential but often lacks representation in international platforms where critical decisions are made. With Chesire’s leadership, the ISO is set to benefit from African insights on issues like climate change, smallholder farming, and sustainable production practices.

Moreover, his election could inspire other African nations to take a more active role in international trade organizations. By participating in high-level decision-making, Africa can advocate for fair trade policies, equitable resource distribution, and investments that support agricultural transformation.

Chesire’s journey to the Vice Chairmanship is not just a personal achievement but a symbol of Africa’s increasing prominence in global affairs. As Vice Chairman, he will play a pivotal role in steering the ISO’s agenda, particularly in areas like market stabilization, technological innovation, and sustainability.

Looking ahead to 2026, when Chesire is expected to assume the role of Chairman, Kenya and Africa stand to gain even greater influence in the global sugar sector. His leadership will be instrumental in shaping policies that ensure the growth and resilience of the industry, particularly for smallholder farmers who form the backbone of sugar production in many developing countries.

Jude Chesire’s election as Vice Chairman of the International Sugar Organization marks a historic milestone for Kenya and Africa. It is a recognition of the continent’s potential and an opportunity to amplify its voice in global decision-making. As Chesire prepares to take on this critical role, he carries the hopes and aspirations of millions across Africa, demonstrating that the continent can not only participate but also lead on the world stage.
