Lucas Bergvall’s decisive goal in Tottenham’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg has sparked controversy, with many questioning whether the midfielder should have been sent off earlier in the match.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk criticized referee Stuart Attwell for failing to issue a second yellow card to Bergvall following a late challenge on Kostas Tsimikas.
- 68th Minute: Bergvall received his first yellow card for a reckless tackle on Luis Diaz.
- 84th Minute: The young midfielder made a dangerous lunge on Tsimikas, forcing the Liverpool left-back off the pitch for treatment. Despite protests from Van Dijk and his teammates, no card was issued.
- 86th Minute: With Liverpool temporarily down to 10 players, Bergvall scored the only goal of the game.
Van Dijk expressed his frustration post-match:
“It was quite obvious it should have been a second yellow. Everyone saw it. The officials, including VAR, failed to act, and that had a big impact on the game.”
Liverpool boss Arne Slot echoed his captain’s sentiments, questioning the referee’s decisions:
“Conceding a goal from a player who should not have been on the pitch is frustrating. It’s not ideal for us or the game as a whole.”
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou voiced his concerns about the growing role of technology in football:
“VAR has changed the game more in the last few years than in the previous 50. It’s taking away the natural flow and creating confusion.”
Postecoglou also criticized the public announcement of VAR decisions, calling it unnecessary and disruptive:
“Do we really need every offside explained? It’s not improving the experience for fans or players.”
For the first time in English football, referee Stuart Attwell used a stadium microphone to announce a VAR decision. The announcement, regarding a disallowed goal by Dominic Solanke for offside, was met with boos and cheers from the crowd, highlighting mixed opinions about the implementation of technology in football.
Liverpool will look to overturn the 1-0 deficit in the second leg at Anfield on Thursday, February 6. With tensions high, all eyes will be on the officiating in the return fixture.
