Mombasa Gears Up for a Safe and Busy Festive Season with Record Tourist Numbers

As the festive season approaches, Mombasa, Kenya’s coastal jewel, is buzzing with heightened activity and optimism. The city, renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and rich history, is experiencing a surge in visitor numbers. Stakeholders in the tourism industry have called for enhanced security measures to ensure both locals and tourists enjoy a safe and memorable Christmas.

This December, Mombasa is seeing an unprecedented influx of visitors, thanks to several events and festivities. Among the highlights is the 5th East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games, which have attracted over 10,000 delegates. Alongside this, holidaymakers and corporate end-of-year parties have filled nearly every hotel in the city.

John Yegon, General Manager at Hotel Sapphire, highlighted the growing importance of MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) in Mombasa.

“Generally, this December will be a very good December for Mombasa. Every single hotel will be busy, and that is fantastic for the industry,” he said.

With thousands of visitors flocking to the city, safety remains a top priority. Mombasa’s Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha have assured tourists of their security. They emphasized that multi-agency efforts have made 2024 a calm year, setting the stage for a peaceful festive season.

Jomvu MP Badi Twalib echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of creating a secure environment.

“Security is the most important thing the government can offer during the festive season. We want the EAC MPs and other visitors to enjoy Mombasa’s nightlife without fear,” Twalib said.

To achieve this, authorities have identified key areas for enhanced surveillance. Tourists can look forward to exploring Mombasa’s lively nightlife, cultural attractions, and public spaces with peace of mind.

Unforgettable Experiences

Beyond security, stakeholders are focusing on delivering exceptional services to visitors. Yegon urged the tourism sector to prioritize guest satisfaction, noting that high-quality experiences could turn first-time visitors into loyal tourists.

“This involves giving the best services and ensuring facilities are in top-notch condition,” Yegon added.

To this end, he called on essential service providers, such as Kenya Power and Mombasa Water and Sanitation Company, to ensure uninterrupted power and water supply throughout the festive period.

Governor Nassir highlighted improvements in the city’s infrastructure, particularly the drainage system, which has minimized flooding despite heavy rains.

“We have ensured that the drainage system is back to its best, so Mombasa will experience little or no flooding,” Nassir said.

These efforts align with the city’s goal to provide a seamless experience for all visitors, whether they’re here for leisure, business, or family gatherings.

Mombasa’s commitment to excellence was recently recognized at the Mombasa Business Awards, organized by the Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Hotel Sapphire bagged the Best Hospitality Business prize, a testament to the city’s world-class service standards.

“At Hotel Sapphire, we can easily cater to 4,000 guests for lunch any day,” Yegon noted, highlighting the city’s capacity to host large events.

The festive season in Mombasa isn’t just about hotels and beaches. The city’s rich culture and iconic landmarks, such as Fort Jesus, provide unique experiences for visitors. Combined with vibrant Christmas markets, local delicacies, and community events, Mombasa offers something for everyone.

Tourists are encouraged to explore the city’s diverse attractions, from the historic Old Town to modern shopping malls and entertainment hubs.

The tourism boom is an opportunity for all stakeholders to shine. Yegon urged industry players to work together to enhance Mombasa’s reputation as a top destination.

“Let’s ensure visitors have the best experience possible, from excellent services to well-maintained facilities,” he said.
