The PEOPLE publication reports that Elton John, the 77-year-old music legend, recently shared that he has lost vision in his right eye due to a severe infection he contracted in July while vacationing in France. The infection has also left him with limited sight in his left eye. He revealed this during the opening night of his new musical, The Devil Wears Prada, in London’s West End.
Speaking on stage, Elton thanked his husband, David Furnish, for his unwavering support during this challenging time. “David has been my rock,” he said, adding, “I haven’t been able to attend many previews because I’ve lost my eyesight. It’s hard for me to see the show, but I love to hear it, and tonight it sounded amazing.”
In a previous interview with Good Morning America, Elton explained how his vision issues have slowed down his work. “I can’t see lyrics or watch anything right now, so recording music is difficult,” he said. Despite this, he remains hopeful about recovery.
Back in September, Elton shared a statement on Instagram, expressing gratitude to his doctors and family for their care and noting that healing will take time. He has been focusing on recovery at home.
The Devil Wears Prada, based on the popular novel and film, features Vanessa Williams as the iconic Miranda Priestly. Elton wrote the music for the show, which had a special gala performance to raise funds for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Fashion icons like Vogue editor Anna Wintour also attended the star-studded event.
Elton’s fans around the world are sending their best wishes as he continues his recovery.
