Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed his readiness to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general election, should he be selected as the opposition’s presidential candidate. Speaking at a church service at Full Gospel Church Magomano in Kiambu County on Sunday, May 11, 2025, Gachagua assured congregants that preparations for the next election are progressing well.

He confirmed that the opposition is united, emphasizing that the coalition is focused on selecting one strong candidate to challenge President Ruto. “There is no division within our team,” Gachagua said, stressing the importance of working together and presenting voters with a serious alternative.

Addressing residents in Juja, Gachagua mentioned key opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua, and Fred Matiang’i, stating they are united in the decision-making process for selecting a flagbearer. He promised that if chosen, he would take on President Ruto with full force, using the Swahili expression of handling him “like a stolen bicycle,” meaning he would not go easy.

Gachagua also pledged to support whichever candidate is ultimately selected, emphasizing that the coalition’s goal is unity and not personal ambition.
Martha Karua, leader of the People’s Liberation Party, echoed this sentiment, stating during her party launch on February 27, 2025, that she would fully support any candidate chosen through a fair process. Karua stressed that the focus is on selecting a transparent and trustworthy leader to move the country forward, regardless of who becomes the deputy or presidential candidate.
Other opposition leaders, including Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa, Justin Muturi, Mintika Linturi, Mukhisa Kituyi, and Maore Maoka, have publicly endorsed unity. During a meeting on April 29, 2025, they pledged to work as one team ahead of the 2027 elections.
As Kenya’s political climate intensifies, the opposition is sending a clear signal: with unity, a single candidate, and a shared vision, they aim to unseat President Ruto and offer leadership aligned with the people’s aspirations.
