NAIROBI, Kenya – May 2, 2025: President William Ruto has expressed confidence that English Premier League side Arsenal can overturn their one-goal deficit against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and book a spot in the UEFA Champions League final.
Ruto, a known Arsenal fan, was speaking on Friday at State House, Nairobi, after receiving the UEFA Champions League trophy as part of its global tour. The Head of State shared his belief that the Gunners have the potential to bounce back when they face PSG in the return leg on Wednesday, May 7, in Paris.
President Ruto Receives Arsenal Jersey at State House
During the event, President Ruto was gifted an Arsenal jersey signed by club legends, handed to him by Manchester United icon Bastian Schweinsteiger. He noted that his role as the final person to handle the trophy during its world tour could inspire the Gunners as they aim to lift the prestigious title for the first time in the club’s history.
“As you know, I am an Arsenal supporter. I am hopeful that they can overcome the 1-0 loss and make it to the final,” Ruto said. “Since I was the last to hold the trophy, I’m praying that this year Arsenal wins it.”
Arsenal lost the first leg at the Emirates Stadium following a first-half goal by PSG’s Ousmane Dembele. The winner of the two-legged tie will face either Barcelona or Inter Milan in the final set to take place in Munich, Germany.
President Ruto praised the quality of the tournament and encouraged fans around the world to enjoy the remaining matches, regardless of their preferred teams.
“Many Kenyans are closely following the Champions League. Whether you’re supporting Arsenal, PSG, Barcelona or Inter Milan, let us all enjoy the beautiful game,” he added.
