President William Ruto held discussions with African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Moussa Faki on Tuesday, focusing on reforms within the African Union and the upcoming election for the AUC Chairperson position.
In a post on X, Ruto confirmed the meeting took place in Kilgoris, Narok County, where they explored ways to enhance the AU’s effectiveness ahead of Faki’s anticipated departure in 2025.
Raila Odinga Eyes AUC Chair Position
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has expressed interest in succeeding Faki as AUC Chairperson. If elected, Odinga plans to advocate for Africa to secure two permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council, citing the need for stronger African representation in global security discussions.
During the Mjadala Afrika debate in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Odinga highlighted Africa’s unity as a bloc of 55 nations and its strategic importance on the global stage.
Ruto Backs Odinga’s Bid
President Ruto has thrown his weight behind Odinga’s candidacy, calling on Kenyans and international partners to support his bid for the AUC leadership.
This development signals Kenya’s continued commitment to playing a key role in shaping Africa’s political and economic agenda.
