A third-year student from Meru University was killed during a violent fight between two groups of fishermen near Lake Victoria in Suba North, Homa Bay County.
The student, Dancun Otenga, had gone for a fishing trip at Lela Beach. A fight broke out between fishermen from Lela Beach and those from Kisaka Beach. The fishermen from Kisaka Beach accused the Lela group of fishing in their fish breeding zone.
During the fight, Dancun was attacked with stones and crude weapons while still inside the boat. He was badly injured, lost consciousness, and drowned.
His body was found on Wednesday, three days after the incident, by local fishermen.
😔 Family Demands Justice
Dancun’s mother, Milliecent Otenga, asked the police and county security team to act quickly and arrest those involved in her son’s death.
The Homa Bay Assistant Chief, Salim Nyauke, confirmed that the student died during the fight in the lake.
Sarah Malit, the County Executive for Fisheries and Blue Economy, condemned the violence and said the government is working with the police to catch the suspects.
