For an airport journey starting in Umoja, however, there is little reason to travel back along the entire route towards Nairobi CBD.
Instead, the more relevant connection is towards Outer Ring Road and the Embakasi side of the city.
Passengers using matatus should ask specifically for a vehicle heading towards the appropriate Embakasi/Airport North Road connection because an ordinary Umoja or Jogoo Road matatu should not automatically be assumed to enter JKIA.
Outer Ring Road Is the Key Connection
For many Jogoo Road–JKIA journeys, Outer Ring Road is the critical connecting corridor.

Travelling With Luggage
The cheapest journey is not necessarily the most practical journey when travelling to an airport.
A passenger with only a small bag may be comfortable changing public transport vehicles within Eastlands.
Someone carrying several suitcases, travelling with children or travelling very early or late may find the interchange inconvenient.
One practical option is to use a matatu for the first part of the journey and then take a taxi or ride-hailing vehicle from somewhere around Donholm, Outer Ring Road or Embakasi for the final airport section.
That reduces the amount of the journey completed by private vehicle without requiring the passenger to carry luggage through several matatu changes.
What About Nairobi Expressway?
Nairobi Expressway is another major way of reaching JKIA, but it is generally more relevant to travellers approaching from the CBD, Westlands, Waiyaki Way and the western side of Nairobi.
For someone already in Eastlands along Jogoo Road, heading towards central Nairobi simply to join the Expressway can create an unnecessary detour.

Congestion around Donholm and other Eastlands junctions can increase travel time, particularly during weekday peak periods.
