Embakasi to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH): Matatu Route, CBD Transfer & Commuter Guide

Travelling from Embakasi to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) by matatu will usually involve a transfer because Embakasi and KNH sit on different sections of Nairobi’s public transport network.

For a passenger unfamiliar with Nairobi’s cross-city matatu system, the easiest journey to understand is:

Embakasi → Nairobi CBD → Kenyatta National Hospital

The first leg takes the commuter from Embakasi towards central Nairobi using an appropriate CBD-bound service. After reaching town, the passenger changes to a matatu serving KNH or the KNH–Mbagathi Way corridor.

There is an important complication on this journey: Route 33 is associated with both the Embakasi side of Nairobi and the Ngumo/KNH side of the city through different variants. Knowing the destination displayed on the vehicle is therefore more important than relying on the number alone.

Best Matatu Strategy From Embakasi to KNH

For a first-time passenger, separate the journey into two parts:

Leg 1: Embakasi → Nairobi CBD

Leg 2: Nairobi CBD → KNH

This is easier than attempting to identify an unfamiliar cross-city combination.

Embakasi is strongly connected to Nairobi’s eastern commuter network, while KNH is part of the Upper Hill–Mbagathi Way transport network.

The CBD provides a major interchange between the two.

Step 1: Find a Nairobi CBD-Bound Matatu in Embakasi

Embakasi is served by several Nairobi-bound matatu services.

Depending on the passenger’s exact starting point, these can include different Route 33 and Route 34 variants and other services connecting the wider Embakasi area with central Nairobi.

For this journey, your first objective is not to find KNH immediately.

It is simply:

Embakasi → Nairobi CBD

Look for a vehicle clearly displaying Nairobi/Town/CBD and confirm the destination before boarding.

Your Starting Point in Embakasi Matters

“Embakasi” can refer to a large part of eastern Nairobi rather than one single matatu stage.

A passenger may be starting around central Embakasi or close to neighbourhoods and corridors such as Fedha, Tassia, Pipeline, Airport North Road or Outer Ring Road.

The best first vehicle therefore depends on the actual starting point.

This is important commuter intelligence because telling everyone to “board Route 33 in Embakasi” would be too simplistic.

A better rule is:

Use the established Nairobi CBD-bound service serving your specific part of Embakasi.

The Metros route database can then provide the detailed route record where one exists.

Understanding Route 33 in Embakasi

Route 33 is particularly important to understand on this journey.

Nairobi has several Route 33 variants associated with the wider eastern side of the city, including services towards Embakasi, Pipeline and Fedha.

Therefore, at the beginning of your journey, a Route 33 may be useful for travelling:

Embakasi → Nairobi CBD

But after reaching town, another Route 33 variant can potentially be useful for:

Nairobi CBD → KNH → Ngumo

These are not simply the same vehicle continuing through town.

The destination displayed on the matatu determines which service you are dealing with.

Step 2: Reach Nairobi CBD

Once your Embakasi matatu reaches central Nairobi, the first leg is complete.

You now need to change from the Eastlands/Embakasi network to the KNH/Mbagathi Way network.

Allow time for this interchange.

Depending on where your Embakasi vehicle terminates and where the KNH service boards, you may need to walk through part of the CBD.

This walking and waiting time is part of the public-transport journey and should be considered when planning a KNH appointment.

Step 3: Ask for Kenyatta National Hospital

Once in the CBD, ask specifically for:

KNH

or:

Kenyatta National Hospital

Don’t simply ask for “Upper Hill.”

Upper Hill is a large employment and institutional district, and not every service travelling into Upper Hill necessarily provides the most convenient access to KNH.

For a hospital journey, the destination should be explicit.

Option 1: Take a KNH-Bound Service

Where available, a matatu displaying KNH/Kenyatta Hospital provides the clearest second leg.

Tell the conductor:

“KNH.”

If you know the particular hospital entrance, department or nearby facility you require, ask whether the service’s normal drop-off is appropriate.

Option 2: Route 40 Through KNH

Route 40 is another useful service because it travels through the KNH/Mbagathi Way corridor.

Its broad journey is:

Nairobi CBD → Community/Upper Hill connection → KNH → Mbagathi Way → Kenyatta Market → Ngumo

View Route 40 Nairobi to Mbagathi and Ngumo

KNH is an intermediate destination on this route.

Therefore, tell the conductor you are alighting at the hospital rather than waiting for the vehicle’s final destination.

Option 3: Route 33 Ngumo

The Ngumo variant of Route 33 can also serve the KNH corridor.

View Route 33 Nairobi to Ngumo

This creates one of the most interesting route-number situations in Nairobi.

A passenger can potentially encounter:

Route 33 – Embakasi/Pipeline/Fedha side

and later:

Route 33 – Ngumo/KNH side

during the same cross-city journey.

The number alone therefore tells you too little.

The Route 33 Rule Every Embakasi Passenger Should Know

When travelling from Embakasi towards Nairobi CBD, check for the appropriate CBD-bound Route 33 variant serving your area.

When travelling from Nairobi CBD towards KNH, look for:

NGUMO / MBAGATHI / KNH

Do not board a Route 33 displaying:

Embakasi

Pipeline

or

Fedha

for the second leg.

Those destinations take you back towards the eastern side of Nairobi.

This is why Metros should record Nairobi public transport as:

route number + route variant + destination + corridor

rather than route number alone.

Why Route Numbers Can Be Misleading

A visitor might reasonably assume:

Route 33 = one fixed Nairobi route.

But Nairobi’s matatu system doesn’t always work that way.

Numbers can have variants associated with different destinations.

The passenger should therefore develop the habit of checking:

1. Route number

2. Destination board

3. Direction of travel

4. Confirmation from the conductor

For Embakasi → KNH, these checks can prevent a significant wrong-direction journey.

Where Should You Alight at KNH?

KNH is a large hospital complex.

Before leaving Embakasi, establish which:

clinic, ward, department, entrance or neighbouring facility

you need.

When boarding the second matatu, tell the conductor that you are going to KNH.

If you’re unfamiliar with the hospital, ask where to alight for your particular destination.

Allow additional walking time after reaching the hospital area.

Why the CBD Transfer Is the Clearest Strategy

The journey crosses two different Nairobi transport systems:

Embakasi

Eastlands/Outer Ring–Jogoo Road or associated CBD corridor

Nairobi CBD interchange

Community/Upper Hill

KNH

Mbagathi Way network

The CBD provides a highly recognisable interchange between these systems.

For an experienced commuter, other combinations may sometimes be possible. But for someone unfamiliar with Nairobi, simplicity and reliability are more important than finding the geographically shortest route.

Can You Avoid Nairobi CBD?

This is where Metros needs to be careful.

Embakasi’s location near Outer Ring Road, Mombasa Road and several cross-city corridors means alternative interchange strategies may exist.

But a road connection does not automatically equal a reliable matatu connection.

Before recommending an alternative, Metros should establish:

Embakasi boarding point → specific vehicle → interchange → specific KNH connection → hospital

Until we have verified that operational chain, the CBD transfer remains the safer documented recommendation for an unfamiliar passenger.

Embakasi to KNH Fare Strategy

The standard journey involves at least two fares:

Fare 1: Embakasi → Nairobi CBD

plus

Fare 2: Nairobi CBD → KNH

A local feeder may add another fare depending on where in Embakasi the passenger starts.

Fares vary and can change at any time.

Rather than publishing an unverified fixed amount, Metros should eventually maintain:

Fare informationStatus
Embakasi → CBD off-peakTo be field verified
Embakasi → CBD peakTo be field verified
CBD → KNHTo be field verified
Typical totalTo be field verified
Last checkedTo be recorded

That creates a fare database that can be updated independently as operating conditions change.

Where Delays Can Occur

The Embakasi-to-KNH journey can be affected by several congestion points.

Embakasi: local traffic and waiting time.

Outer Ring Road/connecting corridors: conditions vary according to the service being used.

Jogoo Road or Mombasa Road approaches: depending on the route, congestion can affect the journey into central Nairobi.

Nairobi CBD: alighting, walking between stages and waiting for the KNH service.

Upper Hill/Community: office traffic can slow the second leg.

KNH: hospital traffic can affect the final approach.

This means a road-navigation travel time should not automatically be treated as a realistic matatu journey time.

Planning for a KNH Appointment

For a medical appointment, account for:

waiting for the Embakasi matatu

Embakasi → CBD

walking to the KNH stage

waiting for the second vehicle

CBD → KNH

walking inside the KNH complex

The transfer is part of the journey.

Passengers should therefore build in a reasonable time buffer rather than planning around the fastest possible road conditions.

Return Journey: KNH to Embakasi

The return journey reverses the network:

KNH → Nairobi CBD → Embakasi

From KNH, board an appropriate CBD-bound service.

After reaching town, find the correct Embakasi-bound matatu for your neighbourhood.

This is where the Route 33 destination distinction becomes important again.

If using a Route 33 service, check whether it is going to the particular eastern destination you require.

For example, a passenger going towards Fedha should not assume that every vehicle displaying Embakasi follows the same local route.

What if You Are Travelling to Fedha, Tassia or Pipeline?

These neighbourhoods are closely associated with the wider Embakasi transport network but have their own route patterns.

Therefore:

Fedha → KNH

Tassia → KNH

and

Pipeline → KNH

should not automatically be treated as identical journeys.

In fact, Pipeline → KNH is scheduled as its own Metros supporting article because the first leg and boarding logic deserve separate treatment.

That is how the repository becomes more precise than treating the whole eastern side of Nairobi simply as “Embakasi.”

Don’t Make These Embakasi-to-KNH Mistakes

The most important errors to avoid are:

  • Assuming there is one universal Embakasi stage.
  • Boarding a matatu based only on the number.
  • Assuming every Route 33 follows the same route.
  • Boarding an Embakasi/Pipeline/Fedha Route 33 for the CBD → KNH leg.
  • Asking only for Upper Hill when you need KNH.
  • Assuming KNH has one drop-off point.
  • Forgetting to budget for two separate fares.
  • Ignoring CBD transfer time when planning an appointment.
  • Treating a road-navigation estimate as the full public-transport journey.
