An Australian woman, Erin Patterson, 50, is on trial for allegedly poisoning her in-laws with deadly mushrooms, resulting in three deaths and one attempted murder. Patterson is accused of lacing a homemade beef Wellington with death cap mushrooms, known worldwide as one of the most lethal fungi.
The victims included her estranged husband’s parents, Don and Gail Patterson, and his aunt Heather Wilkinson, who reportedly praised the dish as “delicious” before dying days later. The only survivor was Ian Wilkinson, a local pastor, who spent several weeks hospitalized.

The tragic incident occurred in Leongatha, Victoria, a quiet farming town in Australia. Patterson’s estranged husband, Simon, declined the lunch invitation, citing discomfort. Erin Patterson has pleaded not guilty, claiming the deaths were a tragic accident.
Doctors initially suspected routine food poisoning, but further testing linked the illnesses to death cap mushrooms, which contain toxins that attack the liver and kidneys. These mushrooms are often mistaken for safe varieties due to their sweet taste and widespread growth in warm, wet areas of Australia.
According to court testimonies, Patterson informed doctors that her own children had eaten parts of the meal, but without the poisonous mushrooms or pastry. She reportedly hesitated to alert them immediately to avoid frightening them. Her brother-in-law, Matthew Wilkinson, described her as previously having a loving relationship with the family.
Prosecutors argue that Patterson carefully avoided consuming the poisonous portions herself and did not serve them to her children. Her defense claims she ate the same dish and was not affected as severely.
The trial, taking place in Melbourne, is expected to last six weeks, drawing national attention due to the shocking nature of the alleged crime.
