Caleb Amisi Warns of ‘Trouble’ in 2027 Amid Surge in Presidential Candidates

Saboti Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has raised concerns over the growing number of presidential candidates declaring their interest in the 2027 general elections. In a statement shared on his official X account on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator warned that the proliferation of aspirants could be part of a calculated strategy designed to disrupt the political landscape and potentially favor the incumbent President William Ruto.

Amisi’s remarks come as the Kenyan political arena begins to heat up with declarations of interest from various seasoned and emerging leaders across the country.

The ‘Magic Formula’ of Multiple Candidates

Amisi believes the increasing number of candidates is not coincidental. He suggests that the phenomenon could be a deliberate scheme orchestrated by individuals who stand to benefit from a divided opposition. According to Amisi, many of these aspirants may be “directly or indirectly sponsored by the very man they pretend to remove from power,” hinting at the possibility of covert strategies to manipulate the electoral outcome.

“The magic formula in the offering: have as many candidates as possible to vie for the presidency,” Amisi wrote. “They all believe they are clean, new, and loved by Kenyans. Some are genuine, but the majority are directly or indirectly sponsored by the very man they pretend to remove from power, with clear instructions and narratives to advance during campaigns.”

The lawmaker expressed skepticism about the practicality of holding a pre-election consensus or mini-election to determine a single opposition candidate, stating, “Who will do the mini-election to ascertain the most preferred? Not possible. Results: kila mtu kwa ballot, kesi baadaye.”

Potential Impact on the Presidential Race

Amisi has painted a grim picture of the potential consequences of a crowded presidential race. He predicts that the high number of candidates on the ballot could make it nearly impossible for any one candidate to secure the constitutional requirement of a majority vote (50%+1) in the first round of voting. This scenario would trigger a presidential runoff, further complicating the political environment.

The lawmaker cautioned that a runoff election could weaken the opposition and benefit the incumbent, as candidates might lack the financial resources, energy, and morale to mount a second campaign. “50%+1 not achieved. Cause a presidential runoff. Tired, financially strained, and exhausted, every candidate will be scrambling to make a deal with the incumbent for Prime Cabinet Secretary, CS Interior, CS Finance, etc. Moi survived this way for 24 years. Kenyans don’t learn,” Amisi stated.

Drawing lessons from Kenya’s political history, Amisi warned that such scenarios have played out before, enabling long-term incumbency through strategic alliances formed during runoffs.

Call for Unity and Strategic Planning

To counter the perceived risk of a fragmented opposition, Amisi emphasized the importance of unity among those seeking to unseat President Ruto. He urged Kenyans to rally behind a single, credible candidate capable of securing a decisive victory.

“If you want Ruto out, identify a suitable candidate and rally behind [them]. Otherwise, you are courting trouble ahead. Kenya needs a Renaissance!” he declared.

Amisi’s remarks reflect the ongoing debate within opposition circles about the best approach to challenge a well-entrenched administration. His call for unity echoes sentiments expressed by other political leaders and analysts who believe that a divided front could hand President Ruto an easy victory.

Who Are the 2027 Presidential Aspirants?

As the clock ticks toward 2027, several prominent figures have already thrown their hats into the ring, signaling their intent to vie for the presidency. The list includes seasoned politicians, rising stars, and activists with diverse visions for Kenya’s future. Below is an overview of the key contenders:

1. Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya

Governor George Natembeya, a former regional commissioner, is among the latest entrants into the presidential race. Known for his administrative experience and grassroots appeal, Natembeya has positioned himself as a reformist leader committed to addressing corruption, insecurity, and economic inequality.

2. Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah

Senator Okiya Omtatah, renowned for his activism and legal battles against government excesses, has emerged as a formidable candidate. Omtatah’s candidacy has garnered significant attention on social media, with supporters praising his integrity and commitment to holding power accountable.

3. Former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i

Fred Matiang’i, a former Interior Cabinet Secretary, has hinted at his intention to contest the presidency. Known for his no-nonsense approach to governance, Matiang’i has built a reputation as a results-oriented leader. However, his association with the previous administration may pose challenges in his quest for State House.

4. Kalonzo Musyoka

Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka remains a perennial contender in Kenyan politics. Having served as Vice President and a key opposition figure, Kalonzo’s experience and loyal voter base make him a significant player in the 2027 race.

5 Morara Kebaso

Political activist and government accountability advocate Morara Kebaso has also declared his candidacy. Kebaso has positioned himself as an alternative voice for change, appealing to Kenyans disillusioned with traditional political elites.

Navigating the Challenges of 2027

The 2027 elections will undoubtedly be a critical moment for Kenya. With multiple candidates vying for the presidency, the electorate faces a complex choice that could determine the country’s trajectory for years to come.

Amisi’s warnings highlight the need for strategic decision-making and collaboration among opposition forces to avoid splitting votes and inadvertently enabling the incumbent’s victory. As the race unfolds, it remains to be seen whether political leaders will heed his advice and rally behind a single candidate or proceed with a fragmented front.

For now, the conversation about unity versus individual ambition continues to dominate the political discourse, setting the stage for what promises to be a high-stakes election season.
