Three police officers on a mission in Nairobi’s Ngara area had their pursuit take a fiery twist on Monday, ending with them nursing serious burns.
According to a police report officers Tom Mbuku, Moses Lelei, and Joyce Otieno were hot on the trail of a suspect accused of ferrying stolen drugs from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) to Ngara Medical Centre. The chase took an unexpected turn when the suspect bolted into a facility and locked himself in, leaving the officers locked out and demanding his surrender.
What followed next was the stuff of drama scripts. A woman identified as Mororoi, 45, emerged from the facility and doused the officers with a chemical suspected to be acid—an aggressive response that no one saw coming.
Backup arrived quickly, rushing the injured officers—who sustained burns on their faces and limbs—to Nairobi West Hospital for treatment. In the process, four individuals found in the facility were apprehended: Mwaura Karumba (60), Beatrice Kamba (36), Faith Mboga (22), and Rose Gitau (46).
Police recovered five liters of what they suspect to be sulphuric acid along with a stash of assorted drugs, now kept as evidence.
While the officers recover, Nairobians can’t help but marvel at this wild urban showdown—a case of crime, chemistry, and perhaps just a pinch of madness. Stay tuned for updates on Metros!
