Tragedy on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway: KPA MD Loses Daughter in Road Accident

Nairobi, Kenya – April 4, 2026: The Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), Captain William Ruto, was involved in a devastating road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Voi on Friday night, resulting in the death of his daughter.

Key Details:
  1. Accident Location: Asali Bar area on the Voi-Taveta road.
  2. Vehicle Involved: Captain Ruto was driving a private vehicle carrying his family and two other passengers.
  3. Cause: The vehicle collided with a stalled Mitsubishi Fuso lorry that had obstructed the lane. The lorry driver was absent from the scene.
  4. Casualties:
    • Mitchelle Chelimo Kemboi, one of Captain Ruto’s daughters, died at the scene.
    • Three other children in the vehicle sustained injuries and were rushed to Taveta Sub-County Hospital, where they are reported to be stable.
  5. Travel Purpose: The family had been en route to Tanzania at the time of the crash.

Police and emergency services responded quickly, securing the scene and transferring the deceased to Taveta Sub-County Morgue. Investigations into the stalled lorry and circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.

The Kenya Ports Authority expressed deep sorrow over the incident:

“We are deeply saddened to announce that our Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William K. Ruto, was involved in a tragic road accident… Regrettably, his daughter did not survive the accident. Capt. Ruto and the rest of his family are in stable condition and under close medical supervision. We remain hopeful for their full and swift recovery.”
