Gunman Who Killed UnitedHealthcare CEO May Have Escaped NYC by Bus, Police Say

The police suspect the gunman who shot and killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in front of a Midtown Manhattan hotel may have fled New York City by bus to Atlanta.

Authorities say the suspect initially arrived in New York City last month, also on a bus from Atlanta. He was seen on surveillance cameras at a hostel before the shooting, where he appeared to flirt with a staff member.

Manhunt Goes Nationwide

The FBI is now assisting the NYPD in the nationwide search for the killer. After the shooting, the gunman was captured on video riding a bicycle into Central Park. He later abandoned the bike, hailed a taxi, and was dropped off at the George Washington Bridge Bus Station. Police believe he boarded a bus and left the city.

Path of Escape

Here’s the suspected timeline:

  1. The Attack: The gunman ambushed Thompson outside the Hilton Hotel on 6th Avenue at 6:46 a.m.
  2. Bike Escape: He walked west, grabbed a bike, and rode north toward Central Park.
  3. Taxi Ride: After leaving the bike, he took a taxi from the Upper West Side to Washington Heights.
  4. Bus Station: At the George Washington Bridge Bus Station, the suspect likely boarded an interstate bus.

Investigation Update

Police are also combing Central Park for a backpack the shooter may have discarded. Officers are working through wooded areas and open grounds in their search.

Authorities believe the suspect used cash for all transactions in New York to avoid being tracked. This story is still developing as law enforcement widens its search.
