Has the Kenya Railways Corporation rejected allegations of malpractice in its Madaraka Express ticketing system just days before the Easter holiday rush?
The corporation has moved to dismiss claims circulating on social media suggesting that staff were hoarding tickets and later reselling them at higher prices when demand increases. But are these concerns valid, and how does the ticketing system actually work?
The clarification came after a social media user accused Kenya Railways staff of withholding tickets and selling them to the highest bidders. Could such alleged practices limit access to rail services at a time when demand for Madaraka Express is expected to surge?
The user warned that the alleged malpractice could undermine fairness, claiming graft was “very much alive” within the ticketing office and system.
“I just hope your staff will not start hoarding the service the way they do with tickets that are eventually sold to the highest bidders. Dishonesty is very much alive in your ticketing office/system,” the user stated.
So how did Kenya Railways respond?
The corporation refuted the allegations, stating that ticket sales are conducted through a structured digital system designed to promote accountability and equal access for all passengers.
“The claims made are not accurate. Tickets are sold through a structured digital system designed to ensure fairness and transparency,” the corporation stated, while assuring passengers that the process remains transparent.
But how exactly does the Kenya Railways ticketing system operate?
Kenya Railways uses three ticketing channels for the Madaraka Express Standard Gauge Railway. Passengers can book tickets up to 60 days in advance. Does this flexibility help reduce last-minute pressure?
Travelers can:
- Purchase tickets through the official Madaraka Express website
- Use USSD by dialling *639# on mobile phones
- Buy tickets directly at Madaraka Express stations between 1 am and 10 pm
Are payments handled differently depending on the booking method?
Online purchases are completed via mobile money, while station purchases can be made using cash or card.
What happens after booking?
Passengers receive a confirmation SMS and must print their physical tickets at self-service machines at the station before boarding. They are also required to present valid identification such as a national ID, passport, or birth certificate for minors.
Where does the Madaraka Express operate?
The service runs between Nairobi and Mombasa through Voi. There is also an inter-county train that serves five counties, stopping at seven stations along the route. These include:
- Syokimau
- Athi River
- Emali
- Mtito Andei
- Mariakani
- Miritini
With Easter travel demand rising, will the digital system reassure passengers about fairness, or will concerns persist?
