Kenyatta University City Campus: Location and How to Get There by Matatu

Kenyatta University City Campus is located at KU Plaza along Haile Selassie Avenue in Nairobi CBD. The campus is positioned opposite the Government Press and close to major city landmarks including Times Tower, the Technical University of Kenya and Nairobi Railway Station. Kenyatta University confirms that its City Campus operates in Nairobi’s CBD along Haile Selassie Avenue. (Kenyatta University Graduation)

Its central location makes the campus accessible from virtually every major Nairobi public transport corridor.

For commuters travelling from outside the CBD, use the Nairobi Matatu Routes and Numbers: Complete Commuter Guide to identify the appropriate route into central Nairobi.

Where is Kenyatta University City Campus?

The campus is located at:

KU Plaza
Haile Selassie Avenue
Nairobi CBD

The university originally established the City Campus at KU Plaza, formerly Autorama House/MFI Office Solutions, opposite the Government Press. More recent university publications continue to identify City Campus as being along Haile Selassie Avenue. (Kenyatta University)

This is different from Kenyatta University Main Campus, which is located along the Thika Road corridor.

How to Get to KU City Campus from Nairobi CBD

If you are already within Nairobi CBD, you normally do not need another matatu.

Head towards Haile Selassie Avenue and locate KU Plaza. Depending on where your matatu terminates, you can walk towards the campus from Railways, Bus Station, Kencom or other central CBD stages.

For the layout of Nairobi’s major stages, use the Nairobi Bus Stations & Matatu Stages and Termini Guide.

Using Railways as a Landmark

Nairobi Railway Station/Railways is one of the most useful transport landmarks for reaching KU City Campus.

KU Plaza is on Haile Selassie Avenue in the same general southern CBD zone as the railway station, Government Press and Technical University of Kenya. (Mapcarta)

If your matatu terminates around Railways, ask for:

KU Plaza / Kenyatta University City Campus / Haile Selassie Avenue

and continue on foot.

From Kasarani to KU City Campus

Passengers travelling from Kasarani can use CBD-bound services through Thika Road.

One option is documented in the Route 49 Nairobi–Kasarani Matatu Guide.

Once you reach Nairobi CBD, continue towards Haile Selassie Avenue and KU Plaza.

There is no need to travel to Kenyatta University’s Main Campus when your destination is City Campus.

From Githurai and Kahawa West

Passengers travelling from Githurai or Kahawa West can use Nairobi-bound services along the Thika Road corridor.

See the Route 44 Nairobi–Githurai/Kahawa West Matatu Guide.

After reaching the CBD, walk towards Haile Selassie Avenue.

From Kenyatta University Main Campus

Students travelling between KU Main Campus and City Campus should board a Nairobi CBD-bound matatu along Thika Road.

The basic journey is:

KU Main Campus → Thika Road → Nairobi CBD → Haile Selassie Avenue → KU Plaza

This is particularly important because the two KU campuses are several kilometres apart.

The Kenyatta University Main Campus: Location and How to Get There by Matatu guide covers the Thika Road campus separately.

From Umoja

Passengers from Umoja can use CBD-bound public transport through Jogoo Road.

One relevant connection is the Route 35/60 Nairobi–Umoja Jogoo Road Matatu Guide.

After reaching central Nairobi, proceed towards Haile Selassie Avenue.

From Kayole

Passengers from Kayole can use Nairobi-bound matatus operating through the Jogoo Road/Eastlands network.

The Route 19/60 Nairobi–Kayole Matatu Guide and Route 1960 Nairobi–Kayole Jogoo Road Matatu Guide cover useful CBD connections.

Once in the city centre, continue to KU Plaza on foot.

From Donholm and Embakasi

Passengers from Donholm and Embakasi can use Nairobi CBD-bound public transport.

The Route 34 Nairobi–Donholm/Embakasi Matatu Guide provides one of the relevant connections.

After arriving in Nairobi CBD, head towards Haile Selassie Avenue.

From Ongata Rongai

Passengers from Ongata Rongai can use Route 125 towards Nairobi through the Lang’ata Road corridor.

See the Route 125 Nairobi–Ongata Rongai Matatu Guide.

Once you reach central Nairobi, proceed towards Haile Selassie Avenue and KU Plaza.

From Kiserian

Passengers travelling from Kiserian can use Route 126 towards Nairobi through Rongai and Lang’ata Road.

See the Route 126 Nairobi–Kiserian Matatu Guide.

After reaching Nairobi CBD, the remaining section can generally be completed on foot.

From Westlands and Kangemi

Passengers from Westlands and Kangemi can use CBD-bound matatus through the Waiyaki Way corridor.

See the Route 23 Nairobi–Kangemi/Westlands Matatu Guide.

After reaching central Nairobi, walk towards KU Plaza on Haile Selassie Avenue.

From Kawangware and Waithaka

Passengers travelling from Kawangware or Waithaka can use Route 2 towards Nairobi CBD.

See the Route 2 Nairobi–Kawangware/Waithaka Matatu Guide.

Once in the CBD, continue towards Haile Selassie Avenue.

Which CBD Stage Should You Use?

There is no single matatu stage that every KU City Campus commuter must use.

Your arrival stage depends on where you are coming from and the SACCO or route you use.

The important principle is:

Your neighbourhood → Nairobi CBD → Haile Selassie Avenue → KU Plaza

Passengers arriving around Railways and the southern CBD are particularly well positioned for the final walk because the campus is located in this section of the city.

Nearby Landmarks

Useful landmarks around KU City Campus include:

Government Press
Times Tower
Technical University of Kenya
Nairobi Railway Station/Railways
Haile Selassie Avenue

KU’s original description specifically identifies the campus as being opposite the Government Press. (Kenyatta University)

These landmarks are more useful when asking for directions than simply saying “Kenyatta University,” which could easily be interpreted as the Main Campus on Thika Road.

KU City Campus and Technical University of Kenya

The Technical University of Kenya (TUK) is also located along Haile Selassie Avenue, making it a useful nearby education landmark. Government planning documents identify both TUK and KU City Campus along the same avenue. (E-Citizen)

Commuters can therefore also use the Technical University of Kenya: Location and How to Get There by Matatu guide when familiarising themselves with this part of Nairobi CBD.

However, the two universities occupy different premises.

KU City Campus vs KU Main Campus

Do not confuse the two destinations.

KU City Campus: Haile Selassie Avenue, Nairobi CBD.

KU Main Campus: Thika Road corridor.

If your timetable, admission documents or appointment states City Campus, travelling to the Main Campus would take you in the wrong direction.

KU’s recent publications confirm that City Campus remains operational in Nairobi CBD and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. (Kenyatta University Graduation)

Matatu Fare to KU City Campus

There is no separate fare for KU City Campus because the campus is inside Nairobi CBD.

Your fare is essentially the normal fare from your starting point to central Nairobi.

The amount can vary according to the route, time of day, passenger demand, traffic and weather.

Confirm the fare before boarding.

How Long Does It Take?

Travel time depends primarily on your starting point and Nairobi traffic.

Major approaches including Thika Road, Jogoo Road, Mombasa Road, Waiyaki Way, Ngong Road and Lang’ata Road can experience heavy congestion during peak periods.

Once you reach the CBD, the remaining journey to KU Plaza is generally a walk.
