Africa’s Strongest Passports in 2026

Africa’s passport rankings continue to show wide gaps in global mobility across the continent.

Seychelles leads Africa and ranks 24th globally, offering visa-free access to 154 destinations, supported by strong diplomacy and global trust.

South Africa ranks 2nd in Africa and 48th globally, with access to 101 destinations visa-free.

Botswana follows in 3rd place in Africa, ranking 59th globally with access to 81 countries.

Namibia is 4th in Africa, ranked 62nd globally, allowing travel to 76 destinations without prior visas.

Lesotho takes 5th place in Africa, ranked 63rd globally, with visa-free access to 74 destinations.

Mid-Tier African Passports

Morocco and Eswatini are tied at 6th place in Africa, both ranking 65th globally with access to 72 destinations.

Malawi ranks 7th in Africa and 66th globally, offering access to 71 destinations without a visa.

Kenya Ranks 8th in Africa

Kenya’s passport is ranked 8th in Africa and 68th globally in the 2026 Henley Passport Index.

Kenyan passport holders can now travel to 69 destinations visa-free or with visa on arrival, a slight drop from 70 destinations in 2025.

Despite the small decline in access, Kenya climbed five places globally, signalling a recovery after last year’s sharp fall caused by stricter immigration rules worldwide.

Why Kenya’s Ranking Has Been Unstable

According to Henley & Partners, Kenya’s passport performance has been volatile due to weak reciprocity and limited bilateral visa agreements.

Historically, Kenya ranked as high as 52nd globally in 2006, but fell to 77th in 2021, reflecting tightening border controls against Kenyan travellers.

The 2026 improvement suggests a period of stabilisation, rather than major gains.

Visa-Free Africa Policy Has Not Paid Off Yet

Kenya scrapped visa requirements for most African nationals in mid-2025, allowing visitors to stay for up to 60 days without visas or eTA.

However, this open-door policy has not yet resulted in reciprocal visa-free access for Kenyan citizens traveling abroad.

Under Henley’s methodology, eTA systems are treated as visa-free, while electronic visas are still counted as visa restrictions.

Global Context: Who Tops and Who Trails

Globally, Singapore tops the 2026 index with access to 192 destinations, followed by Japan and South Korea.

At the bottom of the rankings, Afghanistan remains last, with its citizens able to access only 24 destinations without a visa.

Global Travel Is Growing, But Borders Are Tighter

Henley chairman Dr Christian Kaelin says global mobility has expanded over the past 20 years, but the benefits are uneven, favouring wealthier and politically stable nations.

Meanwhile, IATA projects airlines will carry over 5.2 billion passengers in 2026.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh warns that passports alone are no longer enough, urging governments to adopt digital IDs and digital passports to balance border security with easier travel.
