Arsenal secured a 3–0 home victory over Sunderland in a match that was not as comfortable as the scoreline suggests. Sunderland competed strongly for long periods and at times controlled the game, but Arsenal were more clinical in front of goal.
Some home supporters began leaving the stadium late in the match, believing the result was already decided. Those fans missed Arsenal’s third goal, which came deep into stoppage time and sealed the win in dramatic fashion.
Zubimendi Breaks the Deadlock Before Half-Time
The first half was tense and competitive, with Sunderland defending well and limiting Arsenal’s chances. Arsenal struggled to fully control the midfield, and Sunderland had moments where they looked capable of taking the lead.
The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute when Martín Zubimendi scored after being set up by Leandro Trossard. His effort hit the post before going in, sending Arsenal into halftime with a 1–0 lead despite Sunderland’s strong performance.
Gyökeres Finishes the Job Late On
Arsenal increased their advantage in the second half after several substitutions brought fresh energy. In the 66th minute, Viktor Gyökeres scored Arsenal’s second goal after a well-timed pass from Kai Havertz, giving the home side some breathing space.
Sunderland continued to push but ran out of energy as the match wore on. In stoppage time, Gyökeres struck again after a long run from his own half, finishing a move started by Gabriel Martinelli. The goal came as some fans were already leaving the stadium, unaware that a third goal was about to be scored.
The final whistle confirmed a 3–0 win for Arsenal, a result that keeps them firmly on course in the title race despite a challenging performance.
