Gov’t changes education system from CBC to CBE

Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok has praised the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, calling it the best education system in the world. He said CBE focuses on helping learners discover and grow their individual talents and passions.

Speaking at a thanksgiving event at Baringo High School in Eldama Ravine, Bitok said the new education model is a major improvement from the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). He explained that CBE aims to develop a more skilled, independent, and self-motivated generation.

According to Bitok, the government will use a new system called KEMIS to support a 100% transition rate from Junior School to Senior School. He said that 1.2 million Grade 9 learners are expected to join Grade 10 this year, and the Ministry of Education is ready to ensure every child has a place in senior school.

However, parents and teachers have raised concerns about the lack of clear government guidelines for choosing learning pathways under the new system. This has created anxiety in schools as learners and parents wait for direction ahead of the upcoming transition.

To address these challenges, the Ministry of Education has brought together over 1,000 education stakeholders to help improve and guide the rollout of CBE in Kenya. The ministry also plans to hire 24,000 new teachers this year to support the implementation of Competency-Based Education.
