Nairobi Matatu SACCOs: Major Operators, Routes and Destinations

NAIROBI, Kenya — Nairobi’s matatu system is not organised only around route numbers. Behind the buses and matatus moving commuters between the CBD, estates and satellite towns are SACCOs and transport companies operating on different corridors across the metropolitan area.

For passengers, knowing the SACCO can be as useful as knowing the route number. Some operators are closely associated with specific destinations, while others operate across several corridors.

Metros Kenya has compiled this directory of major Nairobi matatu SACCOs and operators, with links to detailed Metros route guides where those routes have already been published and verified.

For commuters who prefer to search by route number or destination, the main Nairobi Matatu Routes and Numbers database provides the wider network.

Super Metro SACCO

Super Metro has grown into one of the most recognisable public transport brands in the Nairobi metropolitan area, operating across several corridors rather than being tied to one destination.

Major route associations include:

Nairobi → Ngong — Route 111
Serves the Ngong Road corridor through Adams Arcade, Junction Mall and Dagoretti Corner before continuing to Ngong Town.

Nairobi → Kangemi/Uthiru — Route 105
Travels through Westlands and Waiyaki Way towards Kangemi and Uthiru.

Nairobi → Mlolongo/Athi River/Kitengela — Route 110
Serves the Mombasa Road commuter belt towards Mlolongo, Athi River and Kitengela.

Nairobi → Juja
Thika Road corridor.

Nairobi → Thika
Thika Road corridor.

Nairobi → Kahawa West
Thika Road/Kamiti Road corridor.

Because Super Metro operates across multiple corridors, passengers should confirm the destination displayed on the vehicle rather than assuming all Super Metro buses follow the same route.

Embassava SACCO

Embassava is one of the best-known operators in Nairobi’s Eastlands transport market.

Its operating footprint is strongly associated with Embakasi, Pipeline, Donholm, Umoja and other eastern Nairobi destinations.

Major route associations include:

Nairobi → Embakasi/Pipeline — Route 33
A major Eastlands route serving the Embakasi and Pipeline corridor.

Nairobi → Donholm/Embakasi — Route 34

Nairobi → Umoja — Route 35/60

Nairobi → Kayole/Komarock

Nairobi → Njiru/Ruai — Route 38/39

Eastlands contains overlapping services, so the specific Embassava destination displayed on the vehicle remains important.

Umoinner SACCO

Umoinner is strongly associated with the Umoja–Kayole–Buruburu side of Eastlands.

Major route associations include:

Nairobi → Umoja — Route 35/60

Nairobi → Kayole

Nairobi → Buruburu — Route 58
Route 58 travels through Jogoo Road, Makadara and Rabai Road towards Buruburu.

Umoinner’s network illustrates how operators can serve several neighbouring estates within the same wider commuter market rather than being confined to one route.

Forward Travellers SACCO

Forward Travellers has long been associated with the northern Nairobi and Thika Road market.

Major destinations include:

Nairobi → Githurai — Route 45
Serves Pangani, Ruaraka, Roysambu and Githurai 45 through Thika Road.

Nairobi → Ruiru — Route 145
Travels through Githurai, Kahawa and the Kenyatta University area before reaching Ruiru.

Nairobi → Ruiru via Kahawa Sukari — Route 146
Serves Kahawa Wendani, Kahawa Sukari, Kenyatta University and Ruiru.

Nairobi → Juja

Nairobi → Thika

Passengers should confirm the final destination because services along Thika Road can terminate at Githurai, Ruiru, Juja or Thika.

Githurai 45 SACCO

Githurai 45 SACCO is closely associated with one of Nairobi’s busiest commuter corridors.

Its principal route is:

Nairobi → Githurai 45 — Route 45

The route uses Thika Road through Pangani, Ruaraka and Roysambu before reaching Githurai 45.

Because Githurai is also an interchange for services continuing to Kahawa, Ruiru and other destinations, passengers should confirm whether the matatu terminates at Githurai or continues farther.

Forty Four SACCO

Forty Four SACCO is associated with the Githurai/Kahawa West market.

Its principal commuter corridor is:

Nairobi → Githurai / Kahawa West — Route 44

The route uses the northern Nairobi/Thika Road network and provides access towards Githurai and Kahawa West.

A dedicated Metros Route 44 article should be linked here once the preferred canonical URL is confirmed.

Buruburu 58 Travellers SACCO

Buruburu 58 Travellers is closely identified with the Buruburu commuter market.

Its core service is:

Nairobi → Buruburu — Route 58

The route travels through Jogoo Road, Makadara and Rabai Road before entering Buruburu.

This is one of the clearest examples in Nairobi where a SACCO name and route number have become strongly associated with the same destination.

Baba Dogo 25 Travellers SACCO

Baba Dogo 25 Travellers is associated with services connecting central Nairobi with Baba Dogo and the Ruaraka area.

Principal service:

Nairobi → Baba Dogo — Route 25

Passengers should confirm the final Baba Dogo stage because the wider northern Nairobi network also contains services towards Lucky Summer and neighbouring estates.

Mwiki PSV SACCO

Mwiki PSV serves the northern Nairobi commuter market extending through Kasarani, Seasons, Sunton and Mwiki.

The operator is useful to passengers travelling beyond Kasarani towards the residential areas farther along the Kasarani–Mwiki corridor.

Where possible, the eventual operator entry should link to the dedicated Metros Kasarani–Mwiki route article rather than a generic Thika Road page.

Metro Trans

Metro Trans operates across several Nairobi corridors.

Its documented service areas include destinations such as:

Nairobi → Kawangware

Nairobi → Ngong — Route 111

Nairobi → Kasarani

Nairobi → Utawala

Nairobi → Mlolongo/Athi River/Kitengela — Route 110

The Ngong and Mombasa Road routes are already covered in detailed Metros guides.

Because Metro Trans operates across different corridors, the destination displayed on the bus should take precedence over the company name when choosing a vehicle.

Rembo Shuttle

Rembo Shuttle is associated with the Mombasa Road commuter market.

Relevant destinations on this corridor include:

Mlolongo

Athi River

Kitengela

The main Metros route guide for this corridor is:

Route 110 — Nairobi to Mlolongo/Athi River/Kitengela.

Operator-specific destinations should continue to be verified before attaching every Route 110 variant directly to Rembo.

Orokise SACCO

Orokise operates within the important Nairobi–Ongata Rongai commuter corridor.

Its principal route association is:

Nairobi → Ongata Rongai — Route 125

Route 125 travels through Lang’ata Road, Bomas and Galleria towards Ongata Rongai.

Passengers travelling beyond Rongai towards Kiserian should instead make sure they board a vehicle continuing farther along Magadi Road.

Rongai SACCO

Rongai SACCO is associated with services connecting Nairobi with Ongata Rongai and the wider Kiserian corridor.

Major route links include:

Nairobi → Ongata Rongai — Route 125

Nairobi → Kiserian — Route 126
Route 126 continues beyond Rongai through Nkoroi and Matasia towards Kiserian.

This corridor demonstrates the importance of confirming whether the vehicle terminates in Rongai or continues farther towards Kiserian.

Serian SACCO

Serian is another operator associated with the Rongai–Kiserian corridor.

Relevant route guides include:

Nairobi → Ongata Rongai — Route 125

Nairobi → Kiserian — Route 126

Passengers should confirm the final destination because Route 125 commonly terminates in Rongai while Route 126 continues farther towards Kiserian.

Ngong Travellers SACCO

Ngong Travellers is associated with the Nairobi–Ngong commuter market.

Its main route is:

Nairobi → Ngong Town — Route 111

The service follows Ngong Road through Adams Arcade, Junction Mall and Dagoretti Corner before continuing towards Ngong.

NMOA SACCO

NMOA is also associated with the Nairobi–Ngong corridor.

Relevant route:

Nairobi → Ngong — Route 111.

More detailed operator-specific information should be added as Metros verifies its current fleet, boarding points and operating pattern.

Kangemi Matatu Owners SACCO

Kangemi Matatu Owners SACCO is associated with the western Nairobi commuter market.

One of the most relevant Metros routes is:

Nairobi → Kangemi/Uthiru — Route 105

Route 105 uses Westlands and Waiyaki Way before serving Kangemi, Mountain View and Uthiru.

The wider Kangemi market is served by several route numbers, so the SACCO should not automatically be treated as the sole operator on Route 105.

Kawangware Matatu SACCO

Kawangware Matatu SACCO is associated with western Nairobi services towards Kawangware and the wider Dagoretti corridor.

Relevant route families include services through Ngong Road, Naivasha Road and Lavington.

Because several Kawangware route numbers and variants exist, individual links should be added only where the SACCO-to-route relationship has been verified.

Eastleigh Route SACCO

Eastleigh Route SACCO serves one of Nairobi’s busiest commercial and residential transport markets.

Principal destination:

Nairobi → Eastleigh

Eastleigh is served through several approaches from the CBD, including the Ngara/Pangani side of the city.

A dedicated Eastleigh route article should eventually be linked from this entry once the preferred current route page is confirmed.

How to Use the SACCO Directory

This directory works differently from the main Matatu Routes database.

If you already know the destination, use the route database first.

For example:

Going to Ngong?
Use Route 111 and then compare the SACCOs operating on that corridor.

Going to Rongai?
Use Route 125. (Metros Kenya)

Going to Kiserian?
Use Route 126.

Going to Ruiru?
Compare Route 145 and Route 146 depending on the part of the Kahawa/Ruiru corridor required.

Going to Buruburu?
Use Route 58.

Going to Kitengela, Athi River or Mlolongo?
Use Route 110 and confirm the final destination shown on the vehicle.

This should be treated as a directory of major documented operators rather than a claim that they are the only SACCOs operating on each road.

Why One Route Can Have Several SACCOs

Nairobi’s matatu system does not operate on a simple one-route-one-SACCO model.

Several SACCOs can operate along the same road and compete for passengers travelling to the same general destination.

That means three different pieces of information matter:

Route number tells the passenger which service they are using.

Destination tells the passenger where the vehicle terminates.

SACCO/operator identifies the organisation operating the vehicle.

For example, a commuter travelling to Ngong may know that Route 111 is appropriate, but several operators may provide services along that corridor.

The same applies to the Thika Road, Eastlands and Rongai networks.

A Living Directory of Nairobi Matatu Operators

This database should not be treated as finished.

Nairobi has many more PSV SACCOs than the best-known names listed above, while routes, fleets and stages can change.

Metros Kenya can therefore expand this article gradually as more operators are field-verified.

Every new SACCO entry should ideally contain:

Operator/SACCO name → routes served → destinations → corridor → boarding point → verified Metros route links → last verified date.

That will make this directory complementary to the existing Nairobi Matatu Routes and Numbers database rather than duplicating it.

The route database answers:

“Which matatu should I take?”

This SACCO directory answers:

“Who operates on that route?”

Together, they form a much more useful picture of Nairobi’s public transport network.
