At Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), international passengers normally present their travel documents to immigration before proceeding to the departure gates.

What Happens at Departure Immigration at JKIA?

The matter can then be reported to the immigration supervisor on duty and, depending on the problem, referred to another government agency.
Being offloaded by immigration is therefore different from simply missing your flight because you arrived late.
Can a Court Order Stop You From Travelling?
Potentially, yes.
Section 48 of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act gives an immigration officer power to arrest, restrain, stop or deny departure to a person against whom a warrant of arrest has been issued by a competent Kenyan court and hand that person to the nearest police officer. Kenya Law
The important point is that the restriction must have a legal basis.
An ordinary private dispute does not automatically give another person the power to stop you at airport immigration.
Can Immigration Stop a Kenyan Citizen From Leaving?
Kenyan citizens have constitutional and statutory protections concerning movement.

What Happens If You Overstay in Kenya?
Foreign visitors must leave Kenya within their authorised period of stay unless they obtain an extension or another lawful immigration status.

Do not assume that leaving the country automatically erases an immigration violation.
What Should You Do Before Your Permitted Stay Expires?
If you intend to remain in Kenya longer than originally authorised, address the matter before your permitted stay expires.

What If You Are Travelling to Another Country Through a Connection?
Immigration may want evidence of your onward journey.

Separately, the airline may check whether you meet the entry or transit requirements of the countries appearing later in your itinerary.
Airline Document Checks and Immigration Checks Are Different
This distinction is important.
Your airline checks documents because it needs to establish that you can travel on the booked itinerary and satisfy destination requirements.
Kenyan immigration determines whether you can lawfully complete departure from Kenya.
Airport security determines whether you and your belongings can enter the security-restricted departure area and aircraft.
A passenger can therefore clear one stage and encounter a problem at another.
Can an Airline Stop You From Leaving Kenya?
An airline can refuse to carry you, but that is not necessarily the same thing as the Kenyan government legally preventing you from leaving the country.
An airline may refuse carriage for reasons arising from documentation, safety, security, passenger conduct or its conditions of carriage.
In that situation, you may still be legally free to leave Kenya — just not aboard that particular flight.
Conversely, immigration could prevent departure even where the airline had already issued you a boarding pass.
What If You Have Already Checked Your Baggage?
If you are prevented from travelling after checking luggage, tell the airline immediately.
The airline and airport may need to locate and offload your checked baggage in accordance with aviation-security procedures.
Do not assume your suitcase will continue to the destination without you simply because it has already disappeared down the baggage belt.
Keep your baggage receipt until the matter is resolved.
Is Being Stopped at Immigration the Same as Being Arrested?
No.
A passenger can be temporarily prevented from proceeding while an immigration issue is investigated without necessarily being under criminal arrest.
However, some situations can lead to police involvement.

Can You Simply Buy Another Ticket?
Not if the underlying issue remains unresolved.
If you missed a flight because of a normal airline or timing problem, purchasing or obtaining another ticket may solve the immediate travel issue.
But if immigration has formally denied your departure because of a legal or documentation problem, another airline ticket will not remove that problem.
Resolve the underlying immigration or legal issue first.
What Happens to Your Ticket If Immigration Stops You?
That becomes a separate airline matter.
Whether you receive rebooking, credit, a refund or nothing can depend on the fare conditions, airline policy and reason you failed to travel.
Government authorities preventing a passenger from travelling does not automatically create a right to a free replacement flight.
Contact the airline immediately once you know you cannot board.
Can You Leave Kenya Through Any Border?
No.
Kenya’s Immigration Regulations require people entering or leaving Kenya to use designated points of entry and departure at the authorised times.
