Nairobi Led in Crime Reports in 2024, But Overall Crime Dropped – KNBS Survey

Nairobi City Police Command Station recorded the highest number of crimes in Kenya in 2024, making up 9.6% of all reported cases nationwide. This is according to the 2025 Economic Survey released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).

A total of 9,717 crimes were reported in Nairobi in 2024, a drop from 11,108 in 2023. Kiambu followed with 8,865 cases (8.8%), and Meru came third with 5,487 cases (5.4%).

Despite Nairobi’s high numbers, the overall number of reported crimes in Kenya fell by 3.5%, from 104,881 in 2023 to 101,220 in 2024.

Marsabit Police Command Station saw the biggest rise in crime, with cases increasing by 41.0%. Other areas with rising crime rates included Narok (34.3%), West Pokot (28.6%), and Migori (23.2%). In contrast, crime declined in Taita Taveta (32.4%), Trans Nzoia (22.1%), and Machakos (15.7%).

Some crime types increased, including criminal damage (0.8%), crimes involving police officers (36.7%), and other penal code offences (16%). Homicide cases slightly dropped to 3,015 from 3,031 the previous year. Offences against morality also declined to 7,523 from 7,655.

There were 17,560 theft cases and 24,972 offences against persons reported in 2024. Drug-related crimes stood at 8,231. Vehicle theft cases dropped to 1,383 from 1,687 in 2023. Crimes involving police officers rose to 246 from 180.

Tourist-related crimes remained the lowest, with only 39 cases reported. Traffic offences fell sharply to 72 from 173. Economic crimes decreased to 4,610 from 4,970, while corruption cases went down to 104 from 116.

The KNBS report also noted that stealing and offences against persons made up 42% of all crimes reported in 2024.
