Ngong–Nairobi Terminus train route

Route: Ngong ↔ Nairobi Terminus
Via: Ongata Rongai

The station sequence from Ngong towards Nairobi is:

  1. Ngong Station
  2. Ongata Rongai Station
  3. Nairobi Terminus

This is not a separate daily urban commuter service. It is a journey segment available when the Nairobi–Suswa Leisure Train is operating and accepting passengers between these stations.

Ngong Station

Ngong Station serves Ngong town and communities along the Ngong Road corridor. It enables passengers to join the train without travelling to Nairobi Terminus or another station farther east.

Passengers coming from Nairobi, Karen, Dagoretti Corner or neighbouring communities can consult the Route 111 Nairobi–Ngong matatu guide when planning their connection to the station.

The railway station may not be within walking distance of every part of Ngong. Passengers should confirm its location and arrange their first-mile transport before departure.

Ongata Rongai Station

Ongata Rongai is the only intermediate station between Ngong and Nairobi Terminus on this journey segment. It serves Rongai and surrounding parts of Kajiado County.

Passengers can connect to the station through public transport operating along Lang’ata Road and Magadi Road. See the Route 125 Nairobi–Ongata Rongai matatu guide for information about the road connection.

Travellers from Kiserian and neighbouring areas may also use the Route 126 Nairobi–Kiserian guide before transferring in Rongai.

Nairobi Terminus

Nairobi Terminus is located in Syokimau rather than Nairobi CBD. Passengers arriving from Ngong or Rongai should therefore arrange onward transport depending on whether they are continuing to the city centre, Mombasa Road, the airport or another destination.

Connections may include commuter trains, shuttle buses, taxis and public transport along the Mombasa Road corridor. Read the Nairobi Central–Nairobi SGR Terminus Link Train guide for the railway connection towards Nairobi CBD.

Connection with other SGR services

Nairobi Terminus is the principal transfer point for Madaraka Express services operating towards Mombasa. However, the Ngong–Nairobi train’s arrival is not necessarily timed to connect with every Nairobi–Mombasa departure.

Passengers planning an onward SGR journey should check both services separately and leave enough time for any transfer.

See the Nairobi–Mombasa Inter-County Train guide and the Nairobi–Mombasa Express Train guide for the available route patterns.

Tickets and service availability

Tickets should be obtained through the official Madaraka Express booking platform, an authorised Kenya Railways USSD service or a passenger-station ticket counter.

Before travelling, confirm that:

  • The Nairobi–Suswa Leisure Train is operating on the intended date
  • Travel between Ngong and Nairobi Terminus is available
  • The train will stop at both selected stations
  • Tickets are available for the required journey
  • Onward transport is available at Nairobi Terminus
Alternative matatu routes

When the train is not operating, matatus provide the main public transport alternative between Ngong and Nairobi. Services generally use Ngong Road, while passengers travelling between Ongata Rongai and central Nairobi commonly use Magadi Road and Lang’ata Road.

Explore the Nairobi Matatu Routes and Numbers guide to compare the available road-based connections.

Matatu routes, boarding stages and fares can change. Confirm the destination displayed on the vehicle before boarding.

Important passenger notice

Train schedules can change at any time. Confirm the latest departure and return times with Kenya Railways.

Train fares, ticketing arrangements and service schedules can change at any time. Check the official Kenya Railways website or Madaraka Express booking platform before travelling.
