A Nairobi-based learning institution has taken a major step toward clean transport after becoming the first school in Kenya to deploy electric school buses.
The School of the Nations has introduced electric buses into its student transport system, marking a milestone in the country’s shift toward sustainable mobility. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with electric bus provider BasiGo.
According to information published by basigo.com, the school has already received the first vehicle in a planned rollout of 11 electric units. The institution aims to fully transition its student transport fleet to electric during 2026.
The principal of the school emphasized that the move is both environmental and educational. The electric bus offers quieter transport, reduced emissions, and gives students practical exposure to sustainability beyond classroom learning.
First Bus Details
- 25-seat electric bus
- Manufactured by BYD
- Previously operated in Nairobi’s public transport sector
- Refurbished to near-new condition
- Meets safety and regulatory requirements
The bus was initially imported by BasiGo in 2023 and has been running in Nairobi for several years. The company now refurbishes such vehicles to expand access to affordable electric transport options.
This refurbishment model allows institutions that may not afford brand-new electric buses to transition to clean mobility at a lower cost.
BasiGo’s Expansion into School Transport
BasiGo’s leadership described the partnership as a demonstration that electric mobility can work beyond public transport. Schools are emerging as a viable sector for adoption, particularly with refurbished vehicles that extend operational life while reducing emissions.
The rollout will also include 10 BasiGo Ma3E electric vans, which will help the school complete its full fleet transition.
Charging Infrastructure and Support
To support the electric fleet, BasiGo will:
- Install on-site charging infrastructure
- Provide access to its charging depots
- Offer maintenance and servicing
- Deliver end-to-end operational support
The company says the project is designed as a model that can be replicated by other schools and institutions across Kenya.
The initiative highlights growing momentum for electric mobility in Nairobi, especially as organizations look for cost-effective and environmentally friendly transport solutions.
