Understanding the Thika Road to JKIA Route

Thika Road does not run directly to JKIA.

Kasarani to JKIA

Kasarani is one of the major residential and commercial areas along the Thika Road corridor.

From Kasarani, motorists heading to JKIA can travel towards connections leading to the eastern side of Nairobi and continue towards Outer Ring Road, Embakasi and the airport road network.

Passengers relying entirely on public transport need to approach the journey differently.

Githurai and Kahawa to JKIA

Travellers starting around Githurai, Kahawa or Kenyatta University are farther north along the Thika Road corridor.

For an airport journey, however, travelling all the way into Nairobi CBD before turning back towards JKIA may not always be the most practical road option.

Thika Road remains the principal corridor towards Nairobi, but motorists should decide in advance whether they intend to approach JKIA through eastern Nairobi or continue towards the city for another airport connection.

Can You Use the Eastern Bypass to Reach JKIA?

The Eastern Bypass can form part of an airport journey for travellers approaching from the Ruiru and eastern metropolitan side.

The bypass connects towards areas including Utawala, from where the road network continues towards Embakasi and the Airport North Road/JKIA area.

Can You Use Nairobi Expressway From Thika Road to JKIA?

Yes, although this involves approaching the airport from a different direction.

A traveller can move from the Thika Road corridor towards central Nairobi and connect to the Nairobi Expressway, which runs along the Mombasa Road corridor towards the JKIA side of the city.

The Expressway does not terminate at the passenger terminal doors. Motorists still have to leave it and use the appropriate airport access roads.

Using Public Transport From Thika Road to JKIA

Thika Road has one of Nairobi’s largest concentrations of matatu services.

But these should not automatically be interpreted as direct airport services.

A traveller using public transport may need to transfer from the Thika Road network to a service operating towards Embakasi or the airport corridor.

The final connection also deserves attention. Some public transport services serving the wider airport area may stop outside controlled airport sections rather than taking passengers directly to a particular terminal. Which Route Is Best From Thika Road to JKIA?

There is no single answer for the entire Thika Road corridor.

A traveller leaving from Roysambu or Kasarani has different options from someone beginning in Ruiru, Juja or Thika.
