Look Up TV Appears to Resume Broadcast Months After Shutdown, Future Still Unclear

Months after officially shutting down its newsroom, Look Up TV appears to be making a quiet return to the airwaves—though its direction and long-term plans remain unclear.

In June 2024, the station publicly announced its closure after six years of operation. During a live broadcast on June 7, journalist Tende Anyula emotionally informed viewers that both the English and Kiswahili bulletins were airing for the last time. He thanked audiences for their support and explained that the company had halted all news programs, a move that left its entire newsroom staff jobless.

At the time, Look Up TV’s shutdown was seen as part of the wider crisis affecting Kenyan media houses, following workforce reductions and closures at major outlets, including Nation Media Group (NMG) and Radio Africa Group’s Kiss TV.

Broadcast Signal and Programming Resume

However, in recent days, viewers have reported that Look Up TV’s on-air programming appears to have returned to its normal schedule. The channel is once again visible on air, running shows and repeat programs, suggesting that operations may be resuming in some form.

Despite the renewed activity, the station has not issued any official communication to clarify whether:

  • It is reopening fully,
  • It is testing a new direction,
  • Or it is simply running old content as it restructures.

The lack of updates has left industry observers and audiences questioning what direction Look Up TV is taking after its abrupt closure.

Media Industry Still Under Pressure

Look Up TV’s unexpected reappearance comes at a time when many Kenyan media organizations continue to struggle with financial challenges, changing consumer habits, and the shift toward digital platforms.

Earlier in June 2024, Nation Media Group announced mass layoffs as part of its restructuring strategy, stating that it needed a leaner and more agile workforce. Similarly, Radio Africa Group shut down Kiss TV in 2023 due to financial constraints, affecting dozens of staff.

What’s Next for Look Up TV?

For now, Look Up TV’s future remains uncertain. While programming has quietly resumed, the station has yet to confirm whether it is officially back, rebranding, or transitioning into a new phase of operation.

Viewers and media analysts continue to watch closely, waiting for clear communication on the station’s next steps.
