Nairobi Floods Update: 37 Dead, Thousands Displaced

Nairobi is facing a devastating flood crisis as heavy rains continue to pound the city. The National Police Service (NPS) reports that 81 people have died nationwide, with Nairobi worst hit at 37 fatalities. Other regions affected include Eastern (21), Rift Valley (8), Nyanza (7), Coast (5), and Central (3).

Around 2,690 families have been displaced, with homes, roads, and critical infrastructure badly damaged. Authorities are urging residents to follow safety advisories, report emergencies through toll-free numbers 999, 911, 112, or via Fichua Kwa DCI at 0800 722 203.

“The rains will continue across the country. Exercise extreme caution, stay updated, and follow government alerts,” NPS advised. Emergency teams are on high alert, ready to respond to distress situations.

The Water Resources Authority (WRA) has specifically warned residents downstream of Nairobi Dam to evacuate immediately due to rising water levels that threaten the dam wall. Residents are urged to move to higher ground.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts moderate to heavy rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours for Nairobi and surrounding areas, increasing flood risks.
