Embakasi Village–Utawala–Ruai Commuter Railway Extension Guide

The proposed Embakasi Village–Ruai commuter railway would extend Nairobi’s eastern passenger rail network by approximately 12 kilometres. The corridor is intended to improve railway access towards Utawala, Ruai and surrounding eastern Nairobi communities, but it is not yet operational.

The corridor can be presented as:

Embakasi Village → Utawala area → Ruai

However, Kenya Railways has not yet published a definitive passenger-station sequence for the proposed extension. Utawala is part of the expected geographical corridor, but Metros should not describe an Utawala railway station as confirmed until detailed plans are released.

Is the railway operational?

No. The existing Nairobi commuter service terminates at Embakasi Village. Passengers cannot currently board a train from Embakasi Village to Utawala or Ruai.

Project-status notice: The Embakasi Village–Ruai railway is proposed and is not open to passengers. The alignment, station locations, construction timetable and opening date may change.

Relationship with the existing Embakasi Village route

The proposed railway would extend the existing Nairobi Central–Embakasi Village service farther east.

Existing service through Makadara, Donholm and Pipeline towards Embakasi Village.

If the extension is completed, passengers could potentially travel from Nairobi Central through Embakasi Village towards eastern Nairobi without changing to road transport at the present railway terminus.

Why the extension is important

Utawala and Ruai have experienced substantial residential and commercial growth, but most commuters depend on matatus, buses, motorcycles and private vehicles.

A railway extension could:

  • Expand commuter rail into eastern Nairobi
  • Reduce pressure on Airport North Road
  • Support the Eastern Bypass transport corridor
  • Provide an alternative to Kangundo Road traffic
  • Improve access to Utawala and Ruai
  • Strengthen train-to-matatu connections
  • Encourage development around future stations

These are anticipated benefits rather than services currently available.

Embakasi Village interchange

Embakasi Village would become the interchange between the existing commuter railway and the proposed eastern extension.

Current road connections from the area serve:

  • Embakasi
  • Pipeline
  • Fedha
  • Donholm
  • Airport North Road
  • Outer Ring Road
  • Utawala
  • Eastern Bypass

Route 33 — Embakasi / Fedha / Pipeline
Serves Embakasi, Fedha and Pipeline with Airport North Road connections.

Proposed Utawala connection

Utawala lies along the Eastern Bypass between Embakasi and Ruai. A future rail connection could provide access to residential estates, schools, businesses and neighbouring areas.

Until railway construction is completed, commuters can use:

Route 33UTW — Utawala
Via Embakasi, Airport North Road and the Eastern Bypass towards Utawala.

Passengers can also consult the Airport North Road–Utawala and Eastern Bypass guide.

Proposed Ruai connection

Ruai would be the outer destination of the proposed extension. It could provide onward interchange with matatus travelling along Kangundo Road and the Eastern Bypass.

Route 38 — Njiru / Ruai
Via Jogoo Road, Outer Ring Road, Umoja and Kangundo Road towards Njiru and Ruai.

Route 39 — Ruai
Serves Ruai through Outer Ring Road, Kangundo Road and Njiru.

Passengers can continue farther east using services towards Kamulu and Joska.

Actual station interchanges should only be added after detailed station plans are confirmed.

Construction and opening date

No confirmed passenger opening date, operating timetable or fare structure should be published at this stage. Kenya Railways listed the Embakasi Village–Ruai line among planned Nairobi railway expansions, but project development is subject to studies, design, financing, procurement and construction. Future schedules and fares

Because the extension is not operational, Metros should not publish:

  • Proposed departure times
  • Estimated train fares
  • Claims about service frequency
  • Unconfirmed station names
  • A construction completion date without an official announcement

These sections can be added when Kenya Railways releases an operational plan.

Current travel alternatives

Until the railway opens, commuters can travel using:

  • Route 33UTW to Utawala
  • Route 38 or 39 to Ruai
  • Eastern Bypass services
  • Kangundo Road matatus
  • Airport North Road connections
  • Local buses, taxis and boda bodas
