Nairobi–Suswa train route

Route: Nairobi Terminus ↔ Suswa
Via: Ongata Rongai, Ngong, Nachu and Maai Mahiu

Although the route summary sometimes lists Rongai, Ngong and Maai Mahiu as its principal stops, the official stopping pattern also includes Nachu Station.

Stations on the Nairobi–Suswa route

Travelling from Nairobi towards Suswa, the route follows this sequence:

  1. Nairobi Terminus
  2. Ongata Rongai
  3. Ngong
  4. Nachu
  5. Maai Mahiu
  6. Suswa

The train serves parts of Nairobi, Kajiado, Kiambu and Narok counties. It is marketed by Kenya Railways as the Suswa Leisure Train and may operate only on selected days.

Nairobi Terminus

Nairobi Terminus is located in Syokimau and is separate from Nairobi Central Railway Station in the CBD. Passengers should include the journey to the terminus when planning their departure.

Selected Madaraka Express services may have a connecting train or shuttle from Nairobi Central Railway Station. Read the Nairobi Central–Nairobi SGR Terminus Link Train guide for more information.

Ongata Rongai Station

Ongata Rongai Station serves passengers travelling to Rongai and surrounding parts of Kajiado County. The station can be useful for residents who want to join the Suswa train without travelling to Nairobi Terminus.

Road connections are available through Lang’ata Road and Magadi Road. See the Route 125 Nairobi–Ongata Rongai matatu guide for public transport information.

Ngong Station

Ngong Station provides access to Ngong town and neighbouring communities along the Ngong Road corridor. Passengers may connect from Nairobi, Karen, Dagoretti Corner, Kiserian and other surrounding areas.

Read the Route 111 Nairobi–Ngong matatu guide when planning the road portion of the journey.

Nachu Station

Nachu is an intermediate station between Ngong and Maai Mahiu. Passengers using this station should arrange their first- or last-mile transport in advance because public transport options may be more limited than those available in Ngong or Ongata Rongai.

Maai Mahiu Station

Maai Mahiu Station serves the Maai Mahiu area and provides connections towards Naivasha, Narok and other destinations along the Nairobi–Narok corridor.

The railway station may be located away from a passenger’s final destination. Travellers should confirm the availability of matatus, taxis or prearranged transfers before arrival.

Suswa Station

Suswa is the western terminus of the Leisure Train. It serves Suswa town and surrounding areas near the border between Narok and Nakuru counties.

Passengers continuing towards Narok, the Maasai Mara or other destinations require onward road transport. Confirm available connections and avoid assuming that a connecting vehicle will be waiting when the train arrives.

Is this a direct Mombasa–Suswa train?

The Nairobi–Suswa Leisure Train is a separate service from the trains operating between Mombasa and Nairobi.

Passengers travelling from Mombasa towards Suswa may need to complete the Mombasa–Nairobi journey first and then transfer to a separate Suswa service at Nairobi Terminus. Connections are not necessarily immediate or guaranteed.

Tickets and booking

Tickets should be purchased through the official Madaraka Express booking platform, the authorised Kenya Railways USSD service or a passenger-station ticket counter.

Before booking, confirm:

  • The date on which the Suswa train is operating
  • The departure and return arrangements
  • Whether the train stops at the required station
  • Ticket availability and passenger identification requirements
  • Transport to and from the selected station
Matatu connections

The railway intersects with several important road-based transport corridors. Passengers can use matatus to reach stations at Ongata Rongai and Ngong or continue from the railway towards nearby towns.

Explore the Nairobi Matatu Routes and Numbers guide for services covering Lang’ata Road, Magadi Road, Ngong Road, Ongata Rongai, Ngong and surrounding areas.

Matatu routes, boarding stages and fares can change. Confirm the destination displayed on the vehicle before boarding.
