🔴LIVE UPDATE: Major Matatu SACCOs Suspend Operations Ahead of Nationwide Strike

Commuters across Nairobi and other towns are expected to face major transport disruption today after several matatu SACCOs and long-distance bus companies announced suspension of operations ahead of the nationwide PSV strike.

The industrial action, organised under the Motorist Association umbrella, is being driven by rising fuel prices and increasing operational costs affecting public transport operators.

🚍 SACCOs & Bus Companies That Have Suspended Operations

The following operators have confirmed they will not operate on Monday, May 18:

1️⃣ Super Metro
2️⃣ Rayan Coach Limited
3️⃣ Forward Travellers SACCO
4️⃣ Latema Travellers
5️⃣ K-Trans Limited

🔹 What Operators Are Saying

🚍 Super Metro

Super Metro announced it would suspend all services in solidarity with the strike.

“In view of the matatu strike slated for tomorrow, we will not be in operation.”

The company said it will communicate once services resume.

🚍 Rayan Coach

Rayan Coach Limited cited security concerns and planned demonstrations as reasons for halting operations.

The company stated passenger and staff safety remains its top priority.

🚍 Forward Travellers SACCO

The SACCO said it had suspended operations in solidarity with motorists protesting recent fuel price hikes.

Operators are demanding government intervention to reduce fuel costs affecting the transport sector.

🚍 Latema Travellers

Latema Travellers also confirmed temporary suspension of services and promised updates once operations resume.

🚍 K-Trans Limited

K-Trans informed customers that all operations had been suspended until further notice due to the strike situation.

⛽ Why PSV Operators Are Striking

Transport stakeholders say recent fuel price increases by Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority have made operations unsustainable.

Matatu operators are also threatening:

  • A 50% fare increase
  • Reduced vehicle deployment
  • Countrywide demonstrations

Operators argue the government has failed to cushion the public transport sector from rising fuel and maintenance costs.

🚦 Expected Impact for Nairobi Commuters

Commuters should prepare for:

  • Long walking distances
  • Higher transport fares
  • Heavy traffic congestion
  • Delays during morning and evening rush hours
  • Difficulty accessing CBD and satellite towns

Areas likely to experience major disruption include:

  • Nairobi CBD
  • Thika Road
  • Mombasa Road
  • Waiyaki Way
  • Jogoo Road
  • Ngong Road
  • Eastern Bypass corridors
