Kenya Plans Digital Media City at Konza Technopolis to Boost Creative Economy

Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced ambitious plans to establish state-of-the-art media facilities at the Konza Technopolis. The initiative aims to unlock the potential of Kenya’s creative and digital economy while positioning the country as a regional hub for media, entertainment, and sports innovation.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, December 2, 2024, Murkomen revealed that the government will develop flagship projects such as a Digital Media City and a Smart Sports Complex at the technopolis.

“The Konza Technopolis is poised to transform Kenya’s creative and sports industries with projects like the Digital Media City and a Smart Sports Complex envisioned. These state-of-the-art facilities will unlock the potential of the creative and digital economy, driving investment, creating thousands of jobs, and positioning Kenya as a hub for innovation in media, entertainment, and sports,” Murkomen stated.

Digital Media City to Occupy 160 Acres

Murkomen disclosed that the Digital Media City, to be developed in partnership with the Republic of Korea, will span 160 acres and serve as a one-stop center for content production, training, and research.

The facility will feature cutting-edge infrastructure for gaming, animation, filming, photography, entertainment, and software development. It will also offer professional training and commercial services aimed at growing Kenya’s creative economy.

“This transformative project will drive Kenya’s creative economy forward by equipping young professionals with the necessary skills and creating opportunities for economic growth,” Murkomen added.

Konza’s Rapid Development

During his visit to the site alongside Konza Technopolis Development Authority CEO John Paul Okwiri, Murkomen lauded the progress of the technopolis, citing milestones such as the operational Konza National Data Centre, the Open University of Kenya, and the nearly complete Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

“These developments not only enhance Kenya’s global competitiveness but also provide a platform for innovation and job creation,” Murkomen noted.

The projects are expected to attract both local and international investors, further accelerating Kenya’s transformation into a regional leader in technology, sports, and the creative economy.
