Red Cross on High Alert as Heavy Rains Threaten Nairobi and Kenya

Thursday, March 19, 2026 — As heavy rains continue to hit Nairobi and other parts of Kenya, the Kenya Red Cross Society has reassured residents that emergency response teams are fully mobilised and ready for action.

The announcement follows a weather advisory from the Kenya Meteorological Department warning that rainfall currently being experienced in several regions is set to intensify between March 19 and March 24, 2026, with some areas expected to receive more than 20 mm of rain within 24 hours.

In a statement shared on the official Red Cross X account, the humanitarian agency said it remains on the ground delivering critical support wherever needed and has urged the public to stay vigilant as weather conditions evolve.

Although most intense rains are forecast over the weekend, Red Cross teams are already conducting preparedness and response activities, including:

  • Monitoring flood‑prone areas and increasing deployment capacity.
  • Assisting communities that have already been affected by rising waters.
  • Coordinating with county governments and other agencies to ensure rapid relief delivery.

Officials stress that the public should follow official updates and safety directives, avoid crossing flooded roads, and relocate from low‑lying areas when necessary — especially in and around Nairobi where drainage and water levels have become a serious concern.

Residents can also expect more updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department as forecasts evolve later this week.
