Planned Matatu Strike Suspended After Talks With Security Agencies

A planned nationwide matatu strike set for Monday, February 2, 2026, has been called off following consultations between transport stakeholders and security agencies.

The decision was announced by the Federation of Public Transport Sector (FPTS), which said discussions involving matatu operators, boda boda representatives, and security officials led to the suspension of the industrial action to allow further dialogue.

According to the federation, stakeholders agreed to halt the strike to create room for negotiations aimed at resolving the issues that triggered the planned protest.

The move means public transport services across the country will continue operating normally, easing fears of disruption at the beginning of the week.

FPTS also indicated that additional consultations are being organized to find a long-term solution. These talks will include representatives from private vehicle owners, freight operators, coach companies, matatu operators, as well as officials from the National Police Service and the National Transport and Safety Authority.

The federation noted that the expanded engagement aims to address sector-wide concerns while improving safety, stability, and efficiency within Kenya’s public transport system.

Commuter Impact 🚐

The suspension removes the immediate risk of transport paralysis, especially in major urban centres like Nairobi. Commuters can expect:

  • Normal matatu operations on Monday morning
  • No widespread fare hikes linked to strike disruptions
  • Reduced uncertainty for workers and students
  • Continued availability of boda boda and feeder services

However, negotiations are ongoing, meaning future action remains possible if talks stall.

Actionable Advice for Commuters 📌

  • Travel early during peak hours to avoid unexpected delays
  • Monitor updates from operators and NTSA
  • Carry alternative transport options where possible
  • Avoid overcrowded vehicles and prioritise safety
  • Follow official announcements on any renewed strike notices

The suspension provides temporary relief, but outcomes from the planned consultations will determine whether stability in the sector is sustained.
