🔴 LIVE COMMUTER UPDATES: Ksh 3.58 Billion Ngong Road Flyover Nears Completion as CBD Commute Set to Drop to 25 Minutes

Thousands of Nairobi commuters using the busy Ngong Road corridor could soon experience major traffic relief as the long-awaited Ngong Road–Naivasha Road flyover approaches completion.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo confirmed on Monday, May 11, that the massive infrastructure project near Junction Mall is now in its final construction phase.

Once opened to traffic, the elevated flyover is expected to reduce travel time between Ngong Town and Nairobi Central Business District from nearly two hours during peak congestion to approximately 25 minutes.

🔴 LIVE UPDATES FROM THE CONSTRUCTION SITE

Construction teams have already completed major structural works on the project, including:

  • Installation of the steel superstructure
  • Completion of the main bridge framework
  • Construction of the elevated carriageway support system

Engineers are now handling the final finishing works before commissioning begins.

Current works include:

  • Deck slab installation
  • Asphalt surfacing
  • Road line marking
  • Installation of safety barriers
  • Mounting of high-mast LED lighting systems

Advanced lighting infrastructure is also being installed to improve visibility and enhance road safety during night operations.

🛣️ WHAT THE NEW FLYOVER FEATURES

The new structure has been designed as an 800-meter elevated dual carriageway with a 254-meter steel bridge section forming the central part of the project.

The flyover includes:

  • Four traffic lanes
  • Dedicated pedestrian walkways
  • Cycling lanes
  • Resting benches for pedestrians
  • Modern drainage infrastructure

The design separates long-distance traffic from vehicles entering Junction Mall, one of Nairobi’s most notorious congestion points.

For years, motorists traveling toward Nairobi CBD have experienced severe delays around the Junction area, especially during evening rush hours and rainy conditions.

Once operational, through-traffic will move above ground level while local turning traffic remains below, significantly easing congestion along the corridor.

COMMUTERS COULD SAVE OVER 90 MINUTES

According to government projections, the project could reduce average peak-hour commute time from Ngong Town to Nairobi CBD by nearly 95 minutes.

Officials say the reduced travel time will:

  • Improve productivity for workers
  • Lower fuel consumption
  • Reduce traffic congestion
  • Improve movement of goods and passengers
  • Support Nairobi’s growing metropolitan economy

The Ngong Road corridor is one of Nairobi’s busiest commuter routes, serving thousands of private vehicles, matatus, school transport vehicles, and delivery trucks every day.

AFCON 2027 TRANSPORT CONNECTION

The project is also expected to play a major role in Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

PS Omollo stated that the upgraded corridor will improve connectivity to Talanta Stadium and surrounding transport routes ahead of the continental football tournament.

Kenya is co-hosting AFCON 2027 alongside neighboring East African countries, increasing pressure on the government to improve urban transport infrastructure before the event.

WHO IS BUILDING THE PROJECT?

The Ksh 3.58 billion project is being implemented by Kenya Urban Roads Authority after groundbreaking officially began in September 2024.

Funding for the project comes through a loan provided by the Spanish Corporate International Fund (FIEM).

Meanwhile, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting:

  • Traffic management around the construction zone
  • Public safety awareness campaigns
  • Enforcement of road safety measures during final works

🚍 METROS COMMUTER INSIGHT

The Junction Mall section has remained one of Nairobi’s biggest traffic bottlenecks for years, affecting commuters traveling between Ngong Road, Naivasha Road, Dagoretti, Karen, and the CBD.

If successfully completed and properly integrated into Nairobi’s wider road network, the flyover could become one of the city’s most impactful congestion relief projects in recent years.

The addition of cycling lanes, pedestrian infrastructure, and upgraded drainage systems also reflects Nairobi’s gradual transition toward more modern urban mobility planning.

With finishing works now underway, commuters along the Ngong Road corridor may finally be weeks away from a major traffic transformation.
