NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 25 — Motorists using Airport North Road and connections towards Syokimau and Katani Road are facing heavy traffic during Tuesday’s evening rush hour, with congestion extending across parts of Nairobi’s busy airport-side transport network.
Traffic information on Waze indicates heavy movement along Airport North Road and towards the Syokimau–Katani Road area, with commuters travelling through the corridor likely to experience longer journey times than usual.

The congestion comes as Nairobi enters the evening peak, when large numbers of workers leave the city, industrial areas, airport-related workplaces and businesses for residential areas around Embakasi, Syokimau and the wider southeastern metropolitan area.
Airport North Road is particularly sensitive to congestion because it carries a mixture of private vehicles, matatus, buses, airport traffic, trucks and commercial vehicles.

It also notes that airport traffic, commercial vehicles and congestion around Embakasi can substantially affect journey times.
Airport-bound passengers should allow extra time
The congestion is particularly important for passengers heading towards Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Airport passengers should allow additional travel time rather than relying on normal journey estimates, especially where their journey requires Airport North Road or connections from Mombasa Road.
The Metros JKIA passenger guide similarly advises travellers approaching the airport through Mombasa Road and Airport North Road to build a traffic buffer into their journeys because travel times can vary considerably.
Public transport passengers are also affected. Airport North Road forms part of several matatu movements serving Embakasi and the airport area, including Route 33B towards Baraka and Airport North Road and services connecting with Outer Ring Road.
Evening rush increases pressure on the corridor
Traffic normally becomes heavier on Nairobi’s outward commuter routes during the evening as passenger and vehicle demand shifts away from the city towards residential areas.
The Airport North Road network connects with Embakasi, Fedha, Pipeline, JKIA, Outer Ring Road, Mombasa Road and the Eastern Bypass, making congestion in one section capable of affecting several connecting journeys.
Motorists heading towards Syokimau and Katani Road should therefore expect delays and consider allowing additional time for their journeys.
